The perennial young oppa of the comedy world Lim Ha Ryong appeared on MBN issue maker talk show "Kim Juha's Day & Night" and showed energy that belied his age.
The 14th episode of MBN "Kim Juha's Day & Night," which aired on Feb. 28 at 9:40 p.m., recorded a nationwide high of 3.5% according to Nielsen Korea.
First, Lim Ha Ryong recalled that 29 years earlier, when Kim Juha was a new announcer at MBC, they exchanged greetings, and he praised her appearance, saying, "I was surprised because she was beautiful. At the time I thought she resembled Woo Hee-jin, but seeing her today she resembles Kim Hye-soo," which delighted Kim Juha. Then Lim Ha Ryong confessed a work-related ailment with a laugh about his trademark diamond step, saying, "Doctors usually say knee joints wear out, but they said it was unusual that my ankles wore out." Also, Lim Ha Ryong, who created many catchphrases and won the KBS comedy grand prize twice in 1989 and 1991, testified to his explosive popularity in his prime, saying, "Work kept coming in." And saying he was the "Midas touch of the comedy world," Lim Ha Ryong explained the reason he had no choice but to split from his strongest partner Shim Hyung-rae.
At that time, Shim Hyung-rae, who ranked third in a public poll of children's idols, proposed a bug corner that children would like, but Lim Ha Ryong rejected the proposal and they went their separate ways. Later, Lim Ha Ryong said he developed his own corner, turning "The gangsters' chorus" into "Angels of the city," and persuaded a producer who worried about a setting featuring gangsters by saying, "Wouldn't a reformed gangster be all right?" Lim Ha Ryong created many hit corners, but he always felt a bittersweet affection for his first partner Shim Hyung-rae, and Shim Hyung-rae, who happened to send a video letter, teased, "What was funny about 'Backpack of memories,' the diamond step and Angels of the city?" playfully, producing a fantastic back-and-forth.
Additionally, when sketch programs disappeared and he felt uncertain, Lim Ha Ryong took an active attitude of "If there's any acting, put me in it" and transitioned to acting, and five years after he began working seriously as a film actor he won the Blue Dragon Film Award for best supporting actor for "Welcome to Dongmakgol." Lim Ha Ryong joked, "I thought I could appear as a father and daughter with friends like Kim Hye-soo and Jun Ji-hyun, even if not in love scenes... otherwise I'm either a People's Army soldier or the village head," then expressed a wish, saying, "I want to try an elderly love scene."
Moreover, Lim Ha Ryong, known as a "rich connector in the entertainment industry," said he has 13,000 contacts in his phone and complained, "In the past I answered SNS messages one by one for hours and overworked my eyes, later even developing glaucoma." He said that he has maintained a 28-year relationship with almost all the guests who appeared on "Kim Juha's Day & Night," and that his connection with Cha Seung-won continued after attending Cha Seung-won's mother's 60th birthday party, which surprised many.
Meanwhile, Lim Ha Ryong said, "During the 'Angels of the city' days my appearance fee was 250,000 won, but I invested 500,000 won a week in costumes," explaining that he originated the riding pants fashion popularized by firefighters and possessed a fashion sense noted by Cho Yong-pil and announcer Kim Byung-chan. In particular, using his specialty he opened a clothing store, and although his first customer was none other than Seotaiji and i-dle, he said there was nothing left over and he eventually had to close the shop.
Meanwhile, Lim Ha Ryong, who changed careers to become a painter in 2019 and had his work recognized, said he soothed the emptiness and loneliness in his heart through painting while his late mother suffered and fought a cerebral infarction, and that this prompted him to embark on the path of a painter. He also recounted a moving episode about his father, who died of illness in 1979 before Lim Ha Ryong became a comedian, when his father raised a cane and then shed tears, adding to the emotional weight as he shed remorseful tears for his father.
Finally, Lim Ha Ryong shared a sweet love story with his wife, who is nine years younger. One day his wife, who happened to see Lim Ha Ryong on the street, pretended to know him after recalling that they had once exchanged greetings in the past, and Lim Ha Ryong confessed he fell in love at first sight, saying, "When such a pretty girl pretends to know me." Moreover, because of difficult circumstances they set up a household and lived together early, and while helping his wife and mother at a market stall he was mistaken for his wife's brother and even received a note meant for his wife, but he said he was simply happy, revealing his loving side. Lim Ha Ryong performed an ending stage with a parody of "Romantic singer" titled "I am the young oppa," and elicited Kim Juha's exclamation of "Oppa~!" proving the swag of the eternal "young oppa."
