ENA Monday-Tuesday drama 'Honor: Their court' Yeon Woo-jin is activating viewers' "tingly" radar.
'Honor: Their court' (directed by Park Gun-ho, written by Park Ga-yeon, planned by KT Studio Jini, produced by How Pictures, hereinafter 'Honor') IT company The Prime CEO Baek Tae-ju (Yeon Woo-jin) is an idealist who argues that "the ultimate value of technology lies in protecting society's weak." He appeared as a figure who emphasized justice, principles and a fair system and supported Kang Shin-jae (Jung Eun-Chae)'s choice. But with twist after twist, the development that makes it impossible not to doubt every character has led viewers to reexamine Baek Tae-ju's words and actions. Between choices that seem to be made out of goodwill, unexplained points were detected and reactions of "but why does it feel off?" erupted. Here, we looked at three questions about Baek Tae-ju that viewers' radar picked up.
1. promise of a public foundation gift & 'Connectin' hacking, is it unconditional goodwill?
Kang Shin-jae, disillusioned by his mother Seong Tae-im (Kim Mi-sook) and the parent company Hae-il's pursuit of only money and power, firmly decided to make the law firm L&J (Listen & Join) independent. Under the plan to newly establish L&J as a nonprofit foundation, he went to Baek Tae-ju and proposed an alliance. But Baek Tae-ju held Kang Shin-jae's hand saying the condition was "to keep walking the lawyer's path stylishly as you are now" without asking for any material benefit. In addition, he expressed an idealistic desire to delete malignant elements and renew the system, saying Hae-il is like legacy code that should have disappeared long ago. Under Seong Tae-im's strategic marriage planning, Hae-il took Kang Shin-jae and Baek Tae-ju as clients. As if waiting for it, he joined forces with Kang Shin-jae and promised to establish a public foundation as an engagement gift.
Questions about such unconditional goodwill do not end here. The password for the 'Connectin' admin screen that genius hacker Kim Dong-je (Kim Moon-ki) of L&J couldn't access after days of trying was unlocked by Baek Tae-ju the moment he touched it. A technical explanation was possible. But the fact that it was resolved in a short time left even more suspicion. Is it simply because he is a capable person leading an IT corporation, or is it possible that someone familiar with internal circumstances was involved? Viewers' radar is reacting.
2. is the terrarium just a hobby?
On one side of Baek Tae-ju's office sits a meticulously arranged terrarium. Kang Shin-jae regarded the small ecosystem where moss and plants are layered as a "cute hobby." But Baek Tae-ju's explanation was different. Pointing to an insect that had appeared in the terrarium, he said "even this small world has balance and order." Then he installed a sticky trap saying "if left as is, the whole will be contaminated," and explained that "the insects, not knowing it's a trap, bite the bait." Designing a small ecosystem and removing beings that disturb its balance — the logic of control and purification. His words, his gaze and his innocent smile left a peculiar tension. Is the "order" he talks about applied only inside the terrarium, or might he be labeling someone a pest in reality as well? His meaningful lines are being pondered.
3. what does the "what goes around comes around" he told Kim Mi-sook in the episode 9 preview mean?
Baek Tae-ju, formalizing the engagement to prospective mother-in-law Seong Tae-im, said he would not mind if Kang Shin-jae did not inherit Hae-il and that he would support that decision. For Seong Tae-im, who has controlled everything, this was clearly a challenge. Tension between the two was captured in the episode 9 preview. Seong Tae-im uses Baek Tae-ju's government's smart city project bid, for which Hae-il provided legal counsel, as a weapon, but Baek Tae-ju, unshaken, said, "I really like the phrase 'what goes around comes around.'" Questions arise as to why he mentioned that things will inevitably return to the right path to Seong Tae-im.
The production team hinted, "choices that look like goodwill, abilities close to perfection, meaningful language. The more closely you look, the more questions multiply — what is Baek Tae-ju's real face? It will begin to be revealed slowly from episode 9, tomorrow (2nd)," and urged, "this week's development will also be unmissable, so please watch the broadcast and don't miss it."
Episode 9 airs on the 2nd at 10 p.m. on ENA and will be available on KT Jini TV and Coupang Play.
