Actor Baek Sung-hyeon will take on the new role of Choi Dae-chi in "Eyes of Dawn."
On the 27th, OSEN exclusively reported that Baek Sung-hyeon will appear in the musical "Eyes of Dawn." According to OSEN reporting, Baek Sung-hyeon will play the male lead Choi Dae-chi and is scheduled to appear on stage starting in March.
The musical "Eyes of Dawn" is based on the drama of the same name that aired as an MBC 30th anniversary special from 1989 to 1990. The original drama consisted of 36 episodes and enjoyed syndrome-level popularity, recording a nationwide peak rating of 58.4% at the time.
The musical "Eyes of Dawn," which premiered in 2019, compressed the 36-episode original into six acts. It stages various turning points in modern and contemporary Korean history on stage, from the Shanghai incident to the Jeju April 3 incident and through the Korean War after the Japanese colonial period.
Among them, Baek Sung-hyeon will play the male lead Choi Dae-chi. Choi Dae-chi is a character that actor Choi Jae-seong delivered a passionate performance for in the original drama. In this production, Baek Sung-hyeon, Kim Joon-hyun and Jung Si-uk are triple-cast to meet audiences.
Regarding Baek Sung-hyeon's casting, musical producer Next Sketch said, "The role of Choi Dae-chi is a character for which acting is important. Choi Jae-seong, who was beloved by the public in the original, also praised Baek Sung-hyeon's joining, saying the synchronization is 100%."
They also emphasized, "Baek Sung-hyeon shows rare charisma on stage with stable acting and strong immersion. His passion is so great that the production team is surprised. All staff are preparing responsibly to meet the expectations of audiences who remember the original."
Baek Sung-hyeon is also currently busy filming the KBS 2TV historical epic "Munmu" while preparing for the musical. "Munmu" is a historical drama that spotlights the great victory history in which the small state Silla defeated Goguryeo and Baekje and repelled the Tang dynasty, completing the unification of the three kingdoms, and it is an ambitious historical epic KBS is presenting following the "Goryeo–Khitan War." Accordingly, Baek Sung-hyeon is expected to show a busy 2026 schedule, appearing in the musical "Eyes of Dawn" and then "Munmu."
Baek Sung-hyeon's stage work also marks his first since the 2017 staging of the play "Josee, the Tiger and the Fish," a span of nine years. In the meantime, Baek Sung-hyeon married Jo Da-bom, a flight attendant who is two years his junior. The two built a family with one daughter and one son and have shared their happy daily life through various broadcasts and social media.
The "Eyes of Dawn" in which Baek Sung-hyeon appears opened on the 24th and runs at Yeomyung at Converse Stage Arena in Dongjak District, Seoul, through April 26. In addition to Baek Sung-hyeon as Choi Dae-chi, the role of Yoon Yeo-ok is played by Park Jeong-ah and Jeong Myeong-eun, and the role of Jang Ha-rim features Song Yong-jin, Park Jin-woo and Kim Jin-woo. The role of Yoon Hong-cheol is shared by Jo Nam-hee, Hong Seo-jun and Noh Woo-jin.<
