Fate War 49, which sparked controversy over defaming the deceased involving fallen police officers and firefighters, will ultimately proceed with reediting in accordance with the wishes of the bereaved families.
On the 27th, the production team of Disney+'s Fate War 49 issued an official statement saying, "We honor the noble sacrifices of the late Firefighter Sergeant Kim Cheol-hong and the late Police Sergeant Lee Jay-hyun, and we thank the firefighters and police officers who even now risk their safety to protect the public. The production team has listened to the families of the bereaved and other concerned parties. Accepting their wishes, we have decided to reedit the relevant parts," it said.
Earlier, Fate War 49 conducted a mission in episode 2, released on the 11th, in which fate diviners were to guess the causes of death of the deceased, and among those deceased revealed in that episode were Firefighter Kim Cheol-hong and Police Sergeant Lee Jay-hyun.
At the time, the production team disclosed personal information such as faces, names and dates of birth with the consent of the families, but contrary to what had been notified to the families in advance, the broadcast included provocative words and expressions, and the controversy continued.
In particular, the bereaved family of Firefighter Kim Cheol-hong strongly protested immediately after the broadcast, saying, "Contrary to the explanation that it was to honor the noble sacrifice, only provocative expressions were exchanged," and said it would consider legal action. When the bereaved family stepped forward, strong public criticism formed against the production team of Fate War 49.
The Korean National Police Agency also reportedly said that when the controversy over defaming the deceased regarding Police Sergeant Lee Jay-hyun, who died in the line of duty while apprehending a suspect, surfaced, it was considering responses such as requesting the deletion of the problematic episode from Fate War 49, requesting an apology, and requesting a review by the Korea Communications Standards Commission.
Nevertheless, as the controversy continued, the Fate War 49 side decided to reedit the content, and the production team bowed its head, saying, "We once again offer our deep apologies to the bereaved families, firefighters and police officers, and viewers who were hurt by our shortcomings and negligence. We will heed the feedback we have received and reorganize and strengthen our production processes."
