A prison term of 3 years and 6 months was finalized for Park Soo-hong's older brother, Mr. Park, who was tried on charges of embezzling billions of won in assets, including appearance fees.
On the morning of the 26th, the Supreme Court's 1st division conducted the sentencing hearing for the appeal of Mr. Park, the older brother of Park Soo-hong, and his sister-in-law, Ms. Lee, who are accused of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (embezzlement). That day the court affirmed the original judgment that sentenced Mr. Park to 3 years and 6 months in prison and Ms. Lee to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 2-year suspended sentence.
Mr. Park was indicted in October 2022 on charges that, from 2011 to 2021, he operated two entertainment agencies, Lael and Mediaboom, over 10 years and siphoned off Park Soo-hong's appearance fees and other funds.
Prosecutors originally viewed that Mr. Park embezzled about 6.17 billion won, but duplicated items were excluded during the first trial. As a result, the embezzled amount was changed to about 4.8 billion won.
At first instance, the court found Mr. Park guilty only of embezzling 2 billion won in company funds and sentenced him to 2 years in prison, and acquitted his wife, Ms. Lee, due to lack of evidence. However, in the second trial he was sentenced to a heavier term of 3 years and 6 months and was detained at sentencing. Ms. Lee was also sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 2-year suspended sentence.
