'You Quiz on the Block' former girl group 4Minute main vocalist Heo Ga-yoon confessed that many things happened after the group's disbandment.
On the 25th broadcast of tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' (hereafter 'You Quiz'), Heo Ga-yoon, who appeared on the show after a long time, greeted Yu Jae-seok warmly. The two said they were happy to see each other after meeting about 10 years ago on 'Happy Together.'
Heo Ga-yoon has been living in Bali for three years. Her healthily tanned skin and bright, sparkling eyes gave a different impression from her days as 4Minute's main vocalist, when her unusually sophisticated looks and powerful singing voice firmly held the distinctive group together.
Heo Ga-yoon smiled and said, "Actually, I never thought I would leave. When hard things piled up and my body got sick, I thought I should go and rest comfortably, so I decided to go to Bali."
She became a trainee at 14 and lived in the practice room for about six years. Heo Ga-yoon said, "I really worked hard as a trainee. Once, as a trainee, I experienced something like school bullying. But my dream to become someone was so desperate that I thought I would rather take it and be done. I asked them not to hit my face," and said she had only recently revealed this to her parents. Heo Ga-yoon said, "At that time, becoming a singer was more important than being scared. I thought things shouldn't change because of that."
However, after the seven-year girl group disbanded and her transition to acting did not go as planned, she felt pressure from the attention around her. Eventually that stress led her to bulimia. Heo Ga-yoon said, "I was someone who never once thought about buying something at a convenience store," and added, "Seniors told me to hold on no matter what. But my throat was badly damaged. It started with insomnia, and because I was awake for long periods, I thought my appetite was increasing." She said she would sweep convenience stores of whatever food was available, go home and eat everything, then visit another convenience store and repeat the same thing.
She said she only stopped eating when she felt a ripping pain in her stomach. After suffering from bulimia for seven years, she showed the will to get treatment by going to a psychiatrist herself.
But misfortune struck again, more than anything else. It was the sudden death of her brother, who was two years older. He had a heart condition and was scheduled for surgery, but he died three days before the operation. Heo Ga-yoon said, "You show the last appearance, right? (After the ritual ended) he was wrapped up tightly, and it looked stifling. I wondered why my brother was like that, but his complexion was different, so I accepted at once that he was not a living person," and said, "That he really became like that, that image doesn't fade."
She explained that while sorting her brother's belongings, her thoughts changed. Heo Ga-yoon said, "When I was sorting my brother's things, there were packaged cans of tuna, instant noodles, and things like that. It was so pitiful," and added, "He worked very hard. He was also busy in fashion." She guessed her brother's feelings, saying, "I always thought, 'If I make a lot of money,' 'If I get this far,' and my brother probably had the place he wanted to be, but he might regret it more than I would. Why did he endure it? Why didn't he do it?"
After that, even when sad, she said with sparkling eyes, "When I'm at home in Korea I would only think, 'What will my future be like?' But when I'm deep in the sea in Bali and look at the sky, I only feel grateful. I think I'm here because of my brother. I gained an awakening thanks to him," and added resolutely, "From now on, if there's something I want to do, I'll live without worrying and challenge it without fear."
