Hollywood actor Martin Short's daughter, Katherine Hartley Short, has died. She was 42.
According to U.S. entertainment outlet Page Six on the 24th (local time), a representative for Martin Short told Page Six, "It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Katherine Hartley Short," and "The Short family is heartbroken, and we ask that you respect their privacy during this difficult time." He added, "Katherine was loved by many and will be remembered as someone who left light and joy in the world."
According to TMZ, Katherine was found dead at her home in Hollywood Hills, California, around 6 p.m. on the 24th. Police and fire authorities responded to a report of a death from gunshot. The Los Angeles Fire Department said, "At 6:41 p.m. we received a report of a firearm at that address, and a woman's death was confirmed at the scene."
Katherine was the daughter adopted by Martin Short and his wife, Nancy Dolman. Nancy Dolman died in 2010 after battling cancer, and the couple had been married for 30 years. In addition to Katherine, the couple adopted two sons, Oliver Patrick and Henry Heitler, raising three children.
The deceased led a meaningful life in both academics and social activities. Katherine earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and gender and sexuality from New York University in 2006, and in 2010 she received a master's degree in social work from the University of Southern California. She later worked as a social worker at a private clinic and worked part time at Amae Health Clinic, which provides mental health treatment.
She also quietly continued meaningful work by participating in nonprofit activities aimed at improving social awareness of mental health.
Katherine occasionally accompanied her father to public events. Most recently, she appeared with her father at her 40th birthday celebration held at the Hollywood Grandmaster Recorders in 2023. Previously, the father and daughter were photographed together at the 2021 pre-Emmy party in West Hollywood and at Bette Midler's New York restoration project event in 2005.
Meanwhile, Martin Short is currently active, appearing in the drama Only Murders in the Building.
