Joo Jong Hyuk said, "When I was young I lived in the Philippines and then went to New Zealand," and added that he majored in hotel management and worked as a bartender.
When asked how he became an actor, he said, "MBC was transferring and filming a promotional video, and I did a bit part for two weeks. I enjoyed that. I told an older guy I worked part-time with that I wanted to act, and he said let's live together."
He continued, "I lived with that older guy for seven years. That guy is the actor Jang Jae-ho. He married Gong Min-jung. I gave a congratulatory speech. As Jeonju came up I started to cry and sobbed loudly. People said I was the ex-boyfriend," he said. Ra Miran also added, "I cry when I go to someone else's wedding."
