SBS's new Friday-Saturday drama "Shin I-rang Law Office" is raising expectations by previewing Yoo Yeon-seok's shocking "alt-persona parade."
The SBS new Friday-Saturday drama "Shin I-rang Law Office," which premieres on Mar. 13 (Fri) (directed by Shin Jung-hoon, written by Kim Ga-young·Kang Cheol-gyu, produced by Studio S·Mongjakso), is a strange yet warm hanpuri adventure about Shin I-rang, a "spirit-possessed lawyer" who exhilaratingly resolves the grievances of the dead (han), and Han Na-hyun, a "cold-blooded elite lawyer" who stakes everything on winning. In the recently released main poster, the divine beings and the dead in the folk-painting-style background behind Shin I-rang (Yoo Yeon-seok) all had his face, drawing attention. The still cuts released today (24th) contain that hint even more clearly.
Shin I-rang, who started his legal career as a late-blooming lawyer, repeatedly suffered rejection for reasons he did not understand whenever he interviewed at law firms, and ultimately chose to open his own practice. But after opening a law office in room 501 of Okcheon Building, which used to be a shaman's house, his daily life completely changed. He began to see ghosts, and the emotions of the dead—whose resentment and anger had reached the extreme—overwhelmed him, and possessions began without warning.
In the released images, Shin I-rang wears a completely different face from before, from an excited middle-aged man with his hand on his waistband to a scientist who conveys cool reason and persistence. Added to this are behind-the-scenes cuts of him wearing a neatly arranged hanbok and taking selfies, raising expectations about how far the genre- and era-crossing "alt-persona parade" will go. Startled by another appearance that suddenly and vividly changes his speech, gaze and gestures, he even feels his own face as if to confirm reality. The passage evokes curiosity about which dead person will appear with what story. The momentary scenes elicit laughter, tension and mystery at the same time.
Above all, Yoo Yeon-seok's one-man acting show, living multiple lives within a single character, is the drama's biggest draw. The character play of multiple figures who completely change occupations, personalities, speech and energy is expected to act as a key device that shakes the rhythm of the drama, enhanced by Yoo Yeon-seok's deep acting range.
The production team said, "Shin I-rang is not simply a character who sees ghosts, but a character who confronts their lives and emotions," adding, "Yoo Yeon-seok appears with a completely different energy in each episode. In addition to the middle-aged man and the scientist shown in the released still cuts, scenes of him being possessed by various dead people will be revealed. His alt-persona parade will become another viewing point, so please look forward to and pay attention until the premiere on Mar. 13 (Fri)."
