Kim Ji-ho updated her status on social media on the 18th. She said, "I threw out my back and have had radiating pain, so I haven't been able to do yoga for more than three months and am receiving treatment and rehabilitation," and revealed the added hardship of her parents' illnesses. Along with this she released a photo of herself reading in a hospital room.
Kim Ji-ho wrote, "I delayed returning it and finally finished reading it," and "My phone distracted me, but the writing kept pulling me in. Because I am sick, hurting and lonely, the writing resonated with me more," showing her affection for the book. The book was by author Kim Hoon.
But the problem was the details in the photo. Kim Ji-ho was holding a ballpoint pen in her hand, and clear underlines drawn with a pen remained throughout the book. Because the book had a library barcode attached, she was criticized for damaging a public library book rather than a personal copy.
The reading verification photo turned into a controversy. People criticized it as an "action lacking common sense" and said she had "no concept of public property" because she casually revealed that she had scribbled in a public library book used by many people. In particular, it emerged that Kim Ji-ho had previously posted a photo of underlines in a library book, adding accusations of "habitual negligence."
As the controversy grew, Kim Ji-ho eventually apologized directly. She said, "I am sorry to those who may have been uncomfortable because of my careless behavior," and bowed her head, saying, "Even though it was a book borrowed from a public library, my habit of underlining in my books came out. It was an absurd action."
She added, "I will either have the library purchase a new copy of the book or pay the expense to replace it," promising a responsible solution, and added, "I will be more careful in my behavior because of this incident."
