Actor An Jaewook, has he forgotten that he drove under the influence twice in the past? He appeared on an alcohol-related variety show and confidently said that he blacks out from drinking, which made many netizens uncomfortable.
An Jaewook appeared on the YouTube channel "Zzanbro" on the 23rd and talked with Lee Jaeryong, Yoon Dahun and Seong Jiru.
That day he said, "Drinking itself is not the purpose. It is just a tool to make people smile brightly and create a pleasant atmosphere," and added, "I nag Seong Jiru hyung to drink while smiling."
However, his family's reactions were somewhat cold. An Jaewook said, "My daughter asked where I was going today, so I said I would have a drink with my uncles after filming, and she said, 'Drinking again?'" He added, "My son said, 'Because dad is an actor, just act like you're drinking and go.'" He went on to say, "Hearing the kids, I think I shouldn't drink today, but that comment makes me feel proud, so I have one more drink."
The problem came with subsequent remarks. When MC Shin Dong-yeob asked, "Have you ever blacked out?" An Jaewook answered, "What's occasional? I blackout a lot." Seong Jiru also chimed in, "When Jae-wook blacks out, I blackout too," and they laughed it off, but after the scene was released some viewers expressed discomfort.
That's because An Jaewook's past drunk-driving record was brought up again. An Jaewook was caught for drunk driving in February 2019 and had his license suspended. At the time, after finishing the musical "Gwanghwamun Sonata" in Jeonju he had drinks near his lodging, and the next day while driving directly to Seoul he was stopped in a crackdown. He later issued an official apology through his agency, saying, "There is no excuse and I feel responsible."
Moreover, this was not the first time. In 2003, An Jaewook caused a rear-end collision while drunk driving after a drama wrap-up party. Following the second drunk-driving charge, he left the musicals "Hero" and "Gwanghwamun Sonata," and he did not participate in the recording of the KBS2 variety show Problem Child in House, in which he was scheduled to appear.
Under fierce criticism at the time, An Jaewook entered a period of self-reflection and returned about five months later with the play "Misery." At the press conference he said, "I know there is criticism that my comeback is too soon," but added, "I don't know how to do anything other than acting. I thought hiding away was not the answer."
