The National Police Workplace Council strongly objected to Disney Plus entertainment program 'War of Destiny 49' treating the circumstances of a fallen police officer's death as entertainment material and using vulgar expressions.
In a statement released on the 23rd, the police council said, "We feel deep anger and devastation at the production team and grants whose behavior demeaned the sacrifice of a public servant who died in the line of duty during the apprehension of a suspect with vulgar slang and turned it into a source of amusement," and criticized, "They have reduced the noble sacrifice of heroes in uniform to gossip."
The controversial scene aired in episode 2, released on the 11th. In that episode, there was a segment about guessing the cause of death of the late Sgt. Lee Jay-hyun, who died in the line of duty while apprehending a suspect in a violent crime in 2004. In the process, one grants mentioned a stabbing situation and used criminal slang, and host Jun Hyun-moo repeated the reference, which was broadcast.
The police council said, "The dedication of public servants who sacrificed their lives for the peace of Korea is a value our society must remember and honor forever," and argued, "The broadcast damaged the deceased's honor and drove a nail into the hearts of the 140,000 police officers who fight on the front lines." It went on to say, "Describing a fallen officer's circumstances using slang used by criminals to elicit laughter is an act that abandons humanity and a clear secondary harm to the deceased and bereaved family."
It specifically called for a public apology regarding Jun Hyun-moo's remarks, saying, "A public figure loved by the public showing enjoyment by endorsing inappropriate expressions revealed a lack of qualification," and urged him to apologize publicly.
The late Sgt. Lee Jay-hyun died after being stabbed while working as a violent crimes detective at the Seoul Western Police Station in August 2004 during the arrest of suspect Lee Hak-man, who was accused of assaulting women. Reports say the suspect suddenly attacked and the sergeant suffered fatal injuries while trying to restrain him.
The police council demanded △the broadcaster's official apology and complete removal of the problematic episode △public apologies and self-reflection from the grants △the highest level of statutory sanctions from the Korea Communications Standards Commission. It added, "We will mobilize all means to respond so that the honor of the fallen is not further damaged," and said, "We will fight to the end to create a society that fully honors such noble sacrifice."
