Actor Kim Beom-rae proved his masterclass as a stage craftsman by successfully completing the musical "Sugar."
The musical "Sugar," in which Kim Beom-rae appeared, closed its Seoul run on the 22nd amid strong interest. "Sugar" is set in the Prohibition era of 1929 and humorously portrays the chaotic happenings that occur when two jazz musicians who accidentally witness a gang murder dress as women and infiltrate an all-female band to save their lives. It is based on the classic comedy film Some Like It Hot, which has been loved worldwide.
Kim Beom-rae gave a passionate performance as Jerry, the pure and eccentric bassist in the play. Jerry is a character who, after witnessing a crime scene with his colleague Joe, transforms into a woman named Daphne and joins the band to avoid threats.
Kim Beom-rae enhanced the play's entertainment by freely switching between the masculine Jerry and the seductive Daphne. His distinctive deep voice, delicate emotional expression and sly comic acting brought dimensionality to the character. Especially after transforming into Daphne, he displayed a different charm with graceful dance lines and facial expressions that drew strong audience response. His stage, which naturally moved between laughter and emotion, conveyed years of accumulated skill and sincerity intact.
Following last year's musical Bloody Love, "Sugar," which marked Kim Beom-rae's return after about a year, took on added significance as a work that confirmed another spectrum of his acting. He perfectly pulled off the provocative cross-dressing performance, showing both challenge and expansion as an actor.
After wrapping the Seoul performances successfully, Kim Beom-rae said, "As always, time passed really quickly. This was the first work in which I challenged cross-dressing while acting, and I approached rehearsals with the mindset that I had to let go of myself to properly portray this role," and added, "I was truly happy while doing 'Sugar' thanks to the audience laughing and enjoying it with us. I am sincerely grateful. Please wait for Jerry and Daphne, who will return."
Meanwhile, Kim Beom-rae will meet audiences once again through regional performances of the cross-dressing musical "Sugar." The Cheongju performances will be held on March 27-28, and the Busan performances on April 10-11, and Kim Beom-rae is scheduled to take the stage and continue his passionate performances.
