'1deungs' Rhee Minjung ended up showing tears during the recording.
On the Feb. 22 broadcast of MBC entertainment show "1deungs" episode 2, Kim Ki-tae delivered a standing-ovation-worthy performance amid even more brutal competition.
On that day, "1deungs," which gathered Korea's ultimate audition champions, finished the scouting round and entered the full-scale war. In particular, a harsh rule was revealed that only the top five teams would advance to the next round, the "match-up" round, depending on the results, raising the singers' tension.
In addition, the first-place finisher in the lineup round received the special privilege of a bye. Heo Gak said, "Please let me win," and Lee Ye-jun also said, "I must be first, not just in the top five," burning with determination.
First, Park Chang-geun took the stage and performed Sanulrim's "I lay satin in my heart." Park Ji-min took a chance with Woodz's "Drowning," but her somewhat unstable pitch left her in the bottom ranks. In contrast, Heo Gak selected Jeon In-kwon's "Don't worry, my dear," becoming a strong favorite to win, and the singers warned, "It's unfair." After watching Heo Gak's performance, Heo Sung-tae marveled, "Heo Gak was Heo Gak."
Next, Baek Cheong-gang sang Wax's "I want to love you" with a sweet voice. Lee Ye-ji performed Davichi's "Don't you know," Lee Ye-jun sang IU's "Love Poem," and Son Seung-yeon captivated the audience with Sung Si Kyung's "Hee-jae."
In the fierce competition, Heo Gak maintained first place. Next came Kim Ki-tae's stage, and Boom expressed expectation, saying, "With this voice, this song is done." Kim Ki-tae said, "I'm excited and worried; the intensity is scary. It can't be helped. I have to sing stronger," and passionately performed Lee Seung-hwan's "How can love be like that," delivering emotion.
Rhee Minjung and Heo Sung-tae ended up in tears, and Baek Z Young applauded, saying, "I can't not stand up." Son Seung-yeon said, "You should give this first place," and Heo Gak said, "This is really absurd," unable to find words for the all-time great performance.
Rhee Minjung said, "I really tried not to cry and held it in, but I can't do anything in front of a lion voice," giving her impressions. At that time, Baek Z Young hinted that Rhee Minjung's tearful stage was heading toward the top ranks. In response, Rhee Minjung said, "I think I have a popular eye. I'm not a professional singer, so listening with the audience makes (the ranking) predictable."
Heo Gak said, "We like our Ki-tae hyung and he sang so coolly, but ballad singers have a few skills. I never dreamed he'd use them before the lineup round. Taking the mic off and singing—already doing that here" and choked up, drawing laughter.
Son Seung-yeon also said, "He already used it in the lineup round, so we can't use an a cappella. He used his super-special finishing move too early," and Heo Gak shouted, "Hyung, did you want to beat me that badly? Was it to that extent?"
Boom then announced, "He didn't use just one technique. We heard that Ki-tae shed tears while singing," and the singers marveled once again.
As a result of the lineup round competition, the final first place was Kim Ki-tae, second was Heo Gak, third Lee Ye-jun, fourth Son Seung-yeon, and fifth Ulala Session, and they advanced to the next-round match-ups.
