Disney+ variety show 'Battle of Destiny 49' has been engulfed in growing controversy, and criticism is intensifying as it was revealed that missions related to fallen public servants appeared repeatedly. In this context, there are reactions saying that Lee Ho-sun, who left after the first episode, "had foresight."
Earlier, the program included a mission to guess the cause of death of the late firefighter Kim Cheol-hong, who died at the scene of the 2001 fire in Hongje-dong, Seodaemun District, Seoul, and the bereaved family protested in the process. The producers defended the use of the photo, saying "we obtained the family's consent," but as the controversy grew they said, "We sincerely apologize to the bereaved family and the fellow firefighters who were hurt."
On top of that, today, the 23rd, when it became known that a scene used an inappropriate criminal slang while dealing with the circumstances of the death of the fallen police officer, the late Police Corporal Lee Jay-hyun, there was strong backlash within the police. The National Police Workplace Council, an alternative organization to the police union, issued a statement on the 23rd condemning, "We express deep anger and devastation at the cast and production staff who degraded the sacrifice of a public servant who died during an arrest as the vulgar slang 'kalppang' and used it as material for entertainment."
Along with this, the actions of Professor Lee Ho-sun, who appeared on the program as a panelist and left after one episode, have again attracted attention. The professor recently posted a long message on social media expressing his feelings, along with the phrase "self-reproach."
He said, "Only after it started did I realize this was not the path for me," and "I learned that I must stand before a path to proceed more cautiously." He also emphasized, "I studied the difference between counseling and shamanism to avoid losing my identity," explaining the background of his voluntary withdrawal. Online, comments included, "Leaving before the controversy means the judgment was ultimately quick," and "Didn't he see the direction and step away himself? He had foresight."
As criticism continues over turning the circumstances of the deaths of fallen firefighters and police officers into variety show missions, questions about the program's planning intent and ethics are expected to persist.
