Director Ryoo Seung-wan spoke directly about his expectations for "Berlin season 2."
On the 20th, an interview with Ryoo Seung-wan, director of the film "Humint," was held at a cafe in Anguk-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
The film "Humint," which opened on the 11th, tells the story of four people who gather in Vladivostok to find clues to incidents occurring in the border area between North Korea and Russia; "Humint," which portrays people with different objectives clashing in Vladivostok where secrets and truths are submerged in a cold sea of ice, is performing well as a work that further expands director Ryoo Seung-wan's stage.
That day, director Ryoo Seung-wan, speaking about his busy schedule keeping up with stage greeting events during the holiday, said, "The atmosphere at the stage greetings was good, so I went around excitedly. Before, during stage greetings the actors would go through the audience taking photos and it was embarrassing, so I stayed in front, but now that's harder. When I follow the actors greeting people, some who missed the actors grab my hand and say they enjoyed it, and of course when Jo In-sung passes by they let go of my hand," adding, "But I'm still very grateful. You can feel the sincere reactions of people who came to the stage greeting or came to see the film. We talk about those things on the bus with the actors."
In the film, the mention of Pyo Jong-seong (played by Ha Jung-woo) from "Berlin" also hinted at the mood for "Berlin 2." Asked whether he had given it any special meaning, he said, "It wasn't that. Coincidentally, Vladivostok was the setting, and in the final part of 'Berlin' it was mentioned as the closest area, other than China, through which one could enter North Korea," he said.
Director Ryoo Seung-wan explained, "This time, since the regional background coincidentally matched, I thought that kind of mention would be a fun Easter egg for those who were thinking of 'Berlin.' It's also a way to explain at once how much power a character like Hwang Chi-seong has." He added that Ha Jung-woo knew in advance that his role would be mentioned in "Humint."
Is there absolutely no connection to "Berlin"? With expectations for "Berlin 2" still growing, director Ryoo said, "I was aware of the expectations. In fact, there was never a script for a 'Berlin' sequel, and it ended with such an open ending. It ends as the energy rises, that's all there was," adding, "At present, there are no specific plans for a sequel."
