Actor Do Sang-woo renewed his "villain of a lifetime" with a classic 'strong-weak-weak-strong' performance.
Do Sang-woo gave a passionate performance as Im Seung-jae, the eldest son of the powerful Do Seung-ji clan head Im Sa-hyung (played by Choi Won-young), in the KBS 2TV Saturday-Sunday miniseries To My Beloved Thief that aired on the 14th.
Having secretly eliminated Dowoldaegun I-yeol (Moon Sang Min) without anyone knowing, Im Seung-jae was convinced he had seized absolute power. Im Seung-jae's meanness, drunk on power, reached its peak at the gathering celebrating his reinstatement. Calling all the ministers together, he did not hesitate to commit shocking acts, including pouring liquor over the head of Yeonguijeong Han Seung-rok (Choi Kwang-il).
But when I-yeol, whom everyone thought was dead, appeared, Im Seung-jae's conspiracy was exposed in full. Im Seung-jae, who had been brutally tortured for attempting to murder a royal, was stunned and plunged into despair when Im Sa-hyung drew a line before King I-gyu (Ha Seok-jin) by saying, "This was the criminal acting alone." Begging, "I do not want to die," Im Seung-jae cried out for his father like a child, prompting viewers to lament.
Afterward, Im Seung-jae met a tragic end at the hands of his father Im Sa-hyung in the prison cell. Briefly relieved by the sight of a father who had not abandoned him, Im Seung-jae soon ate the poisoned meal Im Sa-hyung had brought and ended his life. The image of Im Seung-jae meeting a futile death at the hands of someone he trusted left a strong afterimage on the home audience.
In To My Beloved Thief, Do Sang-woo delivered tension in every appearance as Im Seung-jae, the "hierarchy villain" who ranks every relationship in the world. He vividly portrayed the viciousness hidden behind the noble demeanor of a yangban as he continually threatened Hong Eun-jo (Nam Ji-hyun) and I-yeol.
In particular, Do Sang-woo, with a classic 'strong-weak-weak-strong' approach, fully conveyed Im Seung-jae's chilliness and meanness, demonstrating boundless acting ability. Attention is focused on Do Sang-woo's future path after receiving praise for expanding the spectrum of villain characters through To My Beloved Thief.<
