Musical actor Kai candidly revealed the moment that became a turning point in his stage career.
On the 13th, which was yesterday, Kai appeared on KBS 2TV The Seasons - 10cm's Ssamdamsdam and shared in-depth stories about music.
On that day, MC Kwon Jung-yeol praised Kai as a person who has spent his life with music and introduced his background of attending Seoul Arts High School's vocal department and then completing bachelor's·master's·doctoral programs in vocal performance at Seoul National University, where he currently works as a professor, drawing admiration.
But Kai revealed a past twist different from his seemingly perfect resume. He said his college nickname was 'Seoul National University's Shin Dong-yeob,' which drew attention. Kai recalled, I was very outgoing until I went to the military, and I was often told at school festivals or events, 'Bring Jeong-yeol to emcee,' 'Try to be funny.' I was a student who tried to make people laugh even while getting light smacks from teachers.
However, his ambition for music turned into hardship. He confessed, I once lost my voice badly after overdoing practice; I had surgery and tried everything said to be good for the throat, but it did not return to the way it was. He added that during that period his personality became darker and more serious, and he kept wondering, 'Who am I' and 'What is music.'
The person who became the turning point during his time of wandering was Cho Seung-woo. Kai said, One day I watched senior Cho Seung-woo's musical 'Carmen,' and although he did not seem to be in great condition that day, seeing him carry a piece from beginning to end with dark and painful emotions made me suddenly burst into tears.
He continued, At that moment I realized for the first time that singing is not done by technique or skill alone. He confessed that there was a time when he would check his throat condition first thing in the morning and feel anxious all day if his voice did not sound good, but that work changed a lot of his thoughts about singing.
Kai said that experience led him to fully open his heart to the genre of musical theater. The choice to move from opera singer to musical actor involved intense deliberation and emotional change. <
