Actor Hwang Jung-eum offered to give away i-dle toys for free and became embroiled in an unexpected controversy.
On the 12th, Hwang Jung-eum posted on her personal SNS, Saying "I'm giving away toys for free. Please take them if you need them" and released photos of toys her two sons had used. She gathered various toys such as dinosaurs, cars and robots, announced the giveaway location and time, and allowed people to take them freely. The intention was to share items that were past their period of use with those in need.
However, some netizens expressed disappointment over the posted photos. They pointed out that the toys were placed on the floor among what appeared to be discarded furniture, giving an unorganized appearance. Since these are items for i-dle to use, some responded that she should have sorted and cleaned them more thoroughly. Others added that on secondhand transaction platforms, it is common practice to display items neatly even when giving them away for free.
On online communities, criticism emerged saying, "The intention is good, but the method is disappointing," and "It seems lacking in consideration for the recipients." Some questioned the condition of the toys and even suggested they were close to being waste.
On the other hand, many voices said the criticism was excessive. Opinions emphasizing Hwang Jung-eum's good intentions followed, saying, "Giving away things for free is meaningful in itself," and "If someone who needs them takes them, there's no problem; this is excessive criticism." In particular, some responses said the act should be viewed separately from the current controversy given that it is a donation.
Although the giveaway began with good intentions, opinions diverged over the way it was presented and communicated, and a heated online debate appears to be continuing.
