Actor Hwang Bo-ra is drawing criticism for an overly reckless stunt of staging a traffic accident to promote a group purchase, despite a past license revocation for drunk driving.
On the 11th, Hwang Bo-ra posted a promotional video on her personal SNS for a macadamia group purchase. However, the video begins by staging a traffic accident, creating shock.
In the video, Hwang Bo-ra screams as if she had suddenly been in an accident while driving at night, creating a tense scene. But she soon breaks into a bright smile, reversing the mood, and asks, "Want some macadamia?" while promoting the nuts she is selling through the group purchase.
The video description emphasized major discounts and fast delivery in cooperation with the manufacturer's headquarters, adding that the product is "a premium snack perfect with beer" and "perfect as a late-night diet snack." But it is hard to understand how any of these lines fit with the staged "traffic accident."
As a result, criticism saying "the promotional method is inappropriate" has been pouring in. Not only is there little relevance between a traffic accident and nuts, but using a life-and-death issue like a traffic accident in a video purely for promotion is inappropriate.
Moreover, Hwang Bo-ra previously had her license revoked due to drunk driving. In the early morning of Dec. 20, 2007, at about 12:20 a.m., she was caught by police near the Gangnam-gu Office intersection in Seoul while driving her private car with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.135 percent.
At the time, Hwang Bo-ra told police that a relative had returned home and they had shared a glass of wine. Afterwards, she drove in a highly intoxicated state, was penalized with a license revocation for violating the Road Traffic Act, and stayed at home to reflect.
But her return was quick. She had already finished filming for the movie Radio Days, which was set to open on Jan. 31 the following year. Was the quick comeback in less than two months a sign that past controversies were forgotten? The reckless SNS marketing leaves much to be desired.
Meanwhile, Hwang Bo-ra married Kim Young-hoon, the representative of the agency Walkhouse Company, who is the younger brother of actor Ha Jung-woo and the second son of Kim Yong-gun, and they have one son.
