An actor Hwang Jung-eum's social media post offering a "free toy giveaway" spiraled into unexpected controversy. As the condition of the items in the photos and the way they were posted came under scrutiny, opinions online were divided.
On the 12th, Hwang Jung-eum posted photos on her social media of toys that appeared to have been used by her child, along with the caption, "Giving away toys for free." She added, "Toys my child used cleanly," and "Feel free to take them."
However, immediately after the post went up, some users questioned whether the toys' condition was appropriate for a giveaway. The photos showed toys piled together on plastic sheeting spread over sand, with other items such as chairs and a dresser placed behind them, prompting sharp criticism such as, "Isn't this putting out items that are hard to use?" Others said, "The intent was good, but the organization and display were lacking," and, "If it had been shown a bit more neatly, there would have been fewer misunderstandings."
Amid this, past issues surrounding Hwang Jung-eum are drawing fresh attention. In 2022, it was reported that a company in which she held 100% equity invested 700 million won from borrowed funds in cryptocurrency. Later that December, she was indicted without detention on charges of embezzling 4.34 billion won in company funds. Before trial, she repaid the amount in two installments in May–June last year by liquidating personal assets and other means.
An agency issue also drew controversy at one point. Hunminjeongeum Entertainment, known to be operated as a one-person agency by Hwang Jung-eum, faced friction for not being registered as an agency. In that company, Hwang Jung-eum was listed as CEO, and family members were registered as executives.
Meanwhile, Hwang Jung-eum is focusing on parenting during her self-reflection period. She married pro golfer and entrepreneur Lee Young-don in 2016 and had two sons. After going through reconciliation and separation, she ultimately divorced in 2024. She is currently living with her two children.
