Actor Angelina Jolie rarely spoke about her double mastectomy, saying "my scars are the ones I chose."
Angelina Jolie told France Inter in an interview on the 10th (local time), "The double mastectomy was my choice. I am grateful that I was able to make that choice."
Jolie said, "I have always been someone who is more interested in the scars people carry and the life itself. I am not drawn to the concept of a perfect life without a single scar," adding, "My scars are the choice I made to stay here as long as possible with my children. So I love my scars."
She added, "And I am grateful that there was the opportunity and the choice to do something proactively for my health."
Jolie also said it was especially meaningful to her that she was able to have preventive surgery. He lost his mother to cancer when he was a child, and he is raising his children now without a grandmother. Jolie's mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1999 and later diagnosed with breast cancer. He died in January 2007 at the age of 56.
Jolie said, "So I think that's what life is to me. If, at the end of life, there are no mistakes, no things messed up, and no scars, then that is not a life lived fully."
After testing positive for a genetic mutation in 2013, Jolie received doctors' diagnoses that her chance of developing breast cancer was nearly 90% and underwent a mastectomy. At the time, he wrote in an op-ed for The New York Times, "Deciding to have a mastectomy was not easy. But I am very satisfied with that decision. The risk of developing breast cancer dropped from 87% to less than 5%. I can tell my children they do not have to fear losing their mother to breast cancer." Two years later Jolie decided to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed.
Angelina Jolie last October took the same stance that she was able to have preventive surgery and for the first time revealed double mastectomy scars in Time France. He said, "I want to share these scars with many women I love. I am always moved whenever I see other women sharing their scars."
