Former announcer Choi Seon-gyu recalled a nightmarish day when he almost lost his 3-year-old daughter.
On the 10th, a video titled "Please save my daughter, An announcer Choi Seon-gyu's desperate story" was released on the YouTube channel "CGN." In the video, Choi Seon-gyu, a graduate of KBS's 13th public recruitment announcer class, appeared and recounted the incident that shook his life.
He opened by saying, "It was Sept. 26, 1992. I did the broadcast well that day, and I was on live from 10 until midnight." As he was leaving after the broadcast, a junior announcer ran up crying with a note. Choi recalled, "When I looked at the note there were 18 characters: 'Daughter traffic accident life critical. Gangnam Sungshim Hospital emergency room.'" He added, "They said they had been contacted at 9:50. Wasn't it already past midnight? My daughter was only 3 years old."
The accident scene was even more horrific. He said, "A moving truck that had come to load belongings was reversing, ran over her with the rear wheel and went over her, and then, as if something was stuck, it moved forward again," adding, "She vomited so much blood and was dead at the scene. My wife went under the wheel to pull her out, then went to the emergency room and contacted us."
He headed straight to the hospital, but another hell awaited. "I was broadcasting in Yeouido, and my daughter was in Daerim-dong. It was a distance that would take 10 minutes if the traffic wasn't bad," he said, adding, "We had to pass the Yeongdeungpo rotary, and there the traffic was jammed for an hour before it cleared — it was a traffic hell."
He continued, "My hands and feet were tied, and there was nothing I could do. As a father, there was truly nothing I could do," and confessed, "The scariest moment of my life was being trapped on that road. That became a trauma that lasted more than 10 years."
In despair, the only words he uttered were a single plea. He said, "The sound that came out of my mouth was 'God.' I begged for one hour, 'Please let her live just once.' I cried and blew my nose, saying, 'Please swap her for me,' 'Take me instead,'" and confessed, "I said, 'If you spare my daughter once, I will do whatever you ask.'"
When they arrived at the hospital, his daughter was covered with a white cloth. He said, "I held her for an hour and despaired. I wandered the halls in tears, and then I felt warmth as the child grew warm. Then she began to move a little." However, there was no response from the medical staff. He said, "I begged them to save her, but not a single person came. After a while our daughter started to gag. When they retrieved the clump of blood, she began to breathe."
After that day, his daughter was admitted to the intensive care unit, and he said, "From then on, two years of hospital life began." The daughter, who miraculously regained her life, underwent a long rehabilitation period. Although there were aftereffects from the accident, she has recovered her health and is reported to be working as an airline ground staff member in Canada.
Recalling the time, Choi Seon-gyu cautiously added, "I don't think I could do it again now."<
