Meteorologist Geum Chae-rim announced she left MBC, and MBC said contracts with existing freelance meteorologists have ended, drawing attention.
On the 8th, Geum Chae-rim wrote on SNS, "I delivered the last weather report as a meteorologist as of last Friday," and reflected, "During about five years at MBC, I was always excited every time I stood in front of the camera."
She recalled times when she covered disaster bulletins, on-site reports and early-morning broadcasts, saying, "I have no regrets because I did my best every moment," but confessed, "It is honest to feel regret and emptiness facing the fact that the job I loved is disappearing." She added, "I will greet you in a new form so that this ending becomes another beginning."
Geum Chae-rim was also a peer of the late Oh Yo-an-na, who died after suffering workplace harassment.
Meanwhile, on the 9th, one day later, MBC said contracts with existing freelance meteorologists had ended. Reportedly included were Geum Chae-rim, Lee Hyun-seung, Kim Ga-young and Choi A-ri. MBC said, "New hires will undergo practical training and be gradually deployed to broadcasts."
Earlier, last September, which was the first anniversary of the death of the late Oh Yo-an-na, MBC announced it would abolish the freelance meteorologist system and hire "meteorological and climate experts" as regular employees. Accordingly, the existing freelance meteorologists left the broadcaster.
