Comedian Shim Hyung-rae candidly shared stories about his heyday and the behind-the-scenes of his film productions.
On the 7th broadcast of MBN 'Kim Ju-ha's Day and Night', comedians Kim Jun-Ho and Shim Hyung-rae appeared as guests.
That day Kim Ju-ha said Shim Hyung-rae "earned the most money among comedians," and "I did more than 100 commercials, and if you add the films I appeared in and produced, it's about 118" which surprised viewers.
To this, Kim Jun-Ho mentioned, "There is a story that if he had received equity from Daewon Media instead of appearance fees for 'Young-gu and Ddaengchili,' its value now would have been 200 to 300 billion won," and Shim Hyung-rae explained, "The company Daewon Media was created because of 'Young-gu and Ddaengchili,'" revealing the production backstory.
He said, "At that time I was doing the 'Ureme' series, and when I asked to raise my appearance fee by only 5 million won the lead was replaced," and "Out of disappointment I took 'Young-gu and Ddaengchili' to Daewon Animation," he said. He added, "The screenplay was written in one day, and we recruited director Nam Ki-nam and completed the movie in two weeks."
Shim Hyung-rae said, "I wanted to make a film that could resonate with children," and "film insiders said such an approach didn't make sense, but the results were different." In fact, 'Young-gu and Ddaengchili' ranked No. 1 at the Korean box office in 1989.
He also said, "At that time Ahn Sung-ki hyung was receiving 15 million won in appearance fees, while I received 200 million won," and "an apartment cost 500,000 won," highlighting his stature at the height of his career.
Meanwhile, Shim Hyung-rae has worked as a comedian representing Korea's comedy world and as a film director. He was born in 1958 and is 68 years old this year.
