It drew attention when it was revealed that Crying Nut's bassist Han Kyung-rok's birthday has taken root as a festival called "Gyeongrokjeol."
On the 6th, MBC variety show I Live Alone aired, continuing the daily life of Crying Nut member and "Captain Rok" Han Kyung-rok, who is celebrating his 30th debut anniversary, and introduced the unique culture surrounding his birthday.
That day Han Kyung-rok said, "There are three major holidays in Hongdae," and added, "Halloween, Christmas Eve, and Gyeongrokjeol," drawing laughter. He explained that a birthday gathering named after him is held every year.
After seeing the released footage, Park Ji-hyun expressed surprise, saying, "Is that a birthday party?", and Kian84 also reacted jokingly, surprised at its larger-than-expected scale.
Han Kyung-rok explained the start of Gyeongrokjeol by saying, "It quietly started around 2008 at a chicken restaurant." He continued, "Word that it was fun spread and more people kept coming, and at some point the chicken restaurant couldn't handle it," and said, "So it naturally grew into a festival." Gyeongrokjeol has continued for 18 years this year.
Han Kyung-rok confessed, "I like hanging out with people the most," and said, "I saved a few months of royalty payments and started it with the mindset of 'I'll treat that day.'" In response, Jun Hyun-moo reacted with admiration, saying, "Isn't he the originator of flexing?"
Han Kyung-rok said, "About 800 people come at once, so more than 1,000,000cc of beer is served," and added, "No matter how much we collected it couldn't handle it, so we started receiving sponsorships eight years ago." It was reported that various musicians such as Choi Baek-ho, Han Young-ae, Yoon Do-hyun, Kim Chang-wan, Jannabi, and MeloMance have performed on the Gyeongrokjeol stage, adding to the surprise.
Meanwhile, Han Kyung-rok was born in 1977 and is 48 this year. Gyeongrokjeol, held around his birthday on Feb. 11 each year, is a festival that naturally formed in the Hongdae indie music scene, and Han Kyung-rok is known for maintaining such wide-ranging connections that he is called the "Hongdae network terminator."
