Modern music singer-songwriter Song Sohee, who has pioneered her own genre, was nominated for the Korean Music Awards.
The 23rd Korean Music Awards on the 5th announced nominees in each field, and Song Sohee's second EP Re:5 was selected as a nominee for best pop album.
Re:5 is an album that puts the five elements (五行) into five different tracks on the theme of life's cycles and recovery. Beginning with "Ashine!", which follows the nature of wood (木), followed by "Broken Things", which carries the flowing nature of water (水), the first title track "Hamba Kahle" embodying the nature of earth (土), "A Blind Runner" meaning fire (火), and finally the second title track "Love of Alaska–Sea" possessing the nature of metal (金), the album musically completes the cyclical structure of the five elements.
In particular, the music video for the first title track "Hamba Kahle," produced with inspiration from the fairy tale of Princess Bari, shows high completeness through its narrative story development and dance performance. In the music video, Song Sohee appears as a guide of "purgatory" that connects this world and the afterlife, healing the dead and leading them to the next world. Through a purgatory worldview imbued with the symbols of the five directions and five elements and performances that comfort the dead, it was praised for visually portraying death not as an end but as the beginning of another journey.
Also, the music video drew attention from music fans with its artistic sensibility after the SAL dance team and Bae Jinho, SAL's artistic director and choreographer, joined as movement director, creating a worldview that combined music and performance.
The Korean Music Awards selection committee said, "Song Sohee's new charm shines in the pop album 'Re:5,' which has built her wonderful and original musical world," noting, "The sound design that spans synth-pop and African rhythms, the vividly alive pop melodies in each song, and the concept that unravels life's journey through the five elements (五行) achieved an excellent harmony," explaining the reason they selected Song Sohee's EP Re:5 as a nominee for the best pop album category.
Meanwhile, the 23rd Korean Music Awards ceremony, where Song Sohee is a nominee for best pop album, will be broadcast live on the Korean Music Awards official YouTube channel and the music platform Melon application at 8 p.m. on the 26th.
