'You Quiz on the Block' director Jang Hang-jun said he had a hard time due to the box office failure of his previous work 'Rebound'.
On the 4th broadcast of tvN 'You Quiz on the Block' (hereinafter 'You Quiz'), the OCN programming manager, a physicist, director Jang Hang-jun, and actor Lee Duk-hwa appeared.
Director Jang Hang-jun returned after several years with the film 'The Man Who Lives with the King.' Director Jang Hang-jun, who portrayed the exile life of Danjong in history and Danjong's death with his own interpretation, could not stop smiling at the praise that poured in after the press screening.
Jang Hang-jun said, "Before the release I talked with people at the company. They all agreed that my image is too light and it wouldn't help the film's promotion," and added, "Three people from the film's staff came to today's set. They came in case I made a slip of the tongue. But You Quiz is different, right? I think it's a good program for my personal image too," saying he would work on managing his image.
However, Jang Hang-jun said, "Since I started making films, this is the first time I've received such overwhelming praise. The towering figure in film criticism, critic Lee Dong-jin, praised me for the first time. In my life I never thought I'd be praised by Lee Dong-jin," and proudly displayed a text message sent by Lee Dong-jin. Lee Dong-jin's message, "Director, this is Lee Dong-jin. Yoo Hae-jin, Park Jihoon, Yoo Ji-tae, Jeon Mido, Ahn Jaehong and Park Ji-hwan all showed consistent acting skills and recognition without exception. Among them, Yoo Hae-jin played the role of Um Heung-do, the local clerk of the place where Danjong, played by Park Jihoon, was exiled, who cared for him.
Jang Hang-jun said, "'Um Heung-do' is an adult who actually appears in three lines in historical records. When Danjong died, the Yeongwol clerk Um Heung-do wept, gathered the body and then lived in hiding for the rest of his life, they say. After Sejo killed Danjong he threw the body into the river. Even though Sejo had said that retrieving the body would mean extermination of the three generations, Um Heung-do took out the body, conducted the funeral and lived in hiding for the rest of his life. I wanted to portray the story of Um Heung-do," revealing the reason he visualized the film.
After the star-studded casting, writer Kim Eun-hee told director Jang Hang-jun, "With this level there's no excuse," meaning that any box office failure would definitely be the director's responsibility. To that Jang Hang-jun said, "The expectation became pressure. I lost sleep," and joked, "So I wondered. Is that what a maestro is? Is that how it's always been and I just didn't know?"
However, Jang Hang-jun said, "I prepared Rebound for five years. I was so sad that I cried. With my personality I called people and cried. I cried that I was ruined," saying he cried together with writer Kim Eun-hee.
Jang Hang-jun said, "I don't think losers are weak," and concluded his concise promotion of 'The Man Who Lives with the King.'
