Jeon Soo-kyung recalled to her father about the oldest son's accident, "Was he 11 or 12? The eldest was eating lunch when a friend of his came. They said they were going to swim and catch mudfish, so they left in the middle of the meal. I thought they could handle themselves, but after about an hour outside, he fell into a pool formed by a bomb during the Korean War along the riverbank."
He added, "They just ran in and brought the body back, but in such a short time, what can you do — beating the ground or anything is useless."
Jeon Soo-kyung cautiously asked, "I know how the eldest brother died, but I don't know about the second brother." Her father revealed, "The second had encephalitis. We never even imagined mosquitoes. Encephalitis was epidemic then. Who would have thought it would take a life?"
Then Jeon Soo-kyung asked again, "When he got sick at home, did you take him to the hospital?" Her father replied, "Your mother carried him on her back and went back and forth to me. We went to the hospital, but it was no use. It was something to wail over."
Thus the second son also passed away. Jeon Soo-kyung's father said, "At the time, why were there so many illnesses? The second eventually left because of encephalitis. What can you do but entrust it to the doctor. Your mother ran around a lot. Still, in the end we could not prevent life and death, so you wonder how this could happen."
He added, "We blamed the world and thought about our fate, but what's the use of beating the ground. We went through such trials and lived through the years. Over time it became memories, and when the subject comes up nowadays the past comes to mind anew. I try to live by trying to erase old thoughts," which brought a lump to the throat.
