Actor Halle Berry candidly explained why she has not yet accepted a proposal from her partner Van Hunt.
Halle Berry recently told magazine The Cut in its Jan. 2, 2026, issue, "I haven't said 'yes' yet," adding, "I don't think you need to be married to have a meaningful relationship. I don't know whether we will get married or not," she said.
The two have been in an open relationship for about six years, and Van Hunt already proposed last year. But Halle Berry mentioned a realistic stance on marriage, citing exceptions such as "when you need to make medical decisions or important health decisions as a legal spouse."
She reflected on her three marriages and divorces and also addressed public perceptions. Halle Berry was previously married to David Justice, Eric Benet and Olivier Martinez, but divorced them all.
She said, "After the third divorce people started saying, 'Why can't that person keep a man, there's something wrong,'" adding, "but I've always thought, 'If it's someone who isn't the right fit, I don't want to hold on to them.'"
She showed confidence about her current relationship. Halle Berry said, "This is the best relationship of my life now," and added, "If I had to pick from the people I married in the past, he would actually have been the one I should have married."
Still, explaining why she is not rushing into marriage, she drew a line saying, "Our not marrying doesn't mean a lack of love. Marriage should be a choice, not an obligation." She left open the possibility, saying, "Someday we might get married. It would be because we want to, not because we need to."
Meanwhile, Halle Berry also spoke about her life and career as a Black woman actor. She recalled winning the Academy Award for best actress in 2001 for the film Monster's Ball, but "the next morning I was still Black," noting that structural limits remained even after the win.
She said, "Even now, the fact that as almost a 60-year-old Black woman I can continue doing what I love is a victory," adding, "I have still been fighting, and I am still fighting."
