Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway reunited after 20 years. But instead of a warm greeting, what returned was a cold remark. "Do I know her?"
The first trailer for the movie The Devil Wears Prada 2, released on the 2nd (local time), drew attention by showing a Miranda Priestly more ruthless than in the previous film and an awkward reunion with Andy Sachs standing before her again.
The trailer begins with Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) entering the office of Runway magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) and greeting her. Unlike Andy, who greets her with a bright smile saying "Hello," Miranda tilts her head and responds coldly, "Who is she? Do I know her?"
Art director Nigel Kipling (Stanley Tucci) makes a cutting joke, saying, "Looks like someone TJ Maxx brought in," and Miranda draws a line by saying, "Sorry, I don't remember," which provokes laughter.
When Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt), who was Miranda's chief assistant in the previous film, appears, Miranda delivers another barb, asking, "You're someone I know too?" Emily calmly replies, "We worked at the same company."
In the 2006 original, Andy was the character who left Runway after throwing her phone into a fountain at Paris Fashion Week. In this sequel, she is set to return as a key figure in the fashion industry. Meanwhile, Miranda faces a changing media landscape as she nears retirement.
Fans' reactions were explosive immediately after the trailer was released. Praise flowed: "The premise that Miranda doesn't remember Andy is perfect," "Twenty years have passed but the characters are more alive than ever," and "This is so Miranda."
Meanwhile, The Devil Wears Prada 2 brings back key crew members including original director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, and has generated anticipation with a star-studded cast including Kenneth Branagh, Justin Theroux, Lucy, Sydney Sweeney and Lady Gaga. The film is scheduled to be released simultaneously in North America and the U.K. on May 1.
