The MBC 'Oh Eun-young report' that aired on Feb. 2 was presented as a 'family hell' special. 'Family hell' is a special that highlights family problems that leave deeper wounds because they are the closest relationships, and five families meet with viewers. On the day's broadcast, which was joined by special MC Jang Dong-min, the story of the first family, the 'Aemo family,' was depicted.
The mother of the 'Aemo family' drew Dr. Oh Eun-young's attention for her one-sided personality. Without a single call to the daughter-in-law who was alone caring for the child at home, the mother suddenly showed up and, despite the daughter-in-law's objections, took her granddaughter out for a walk on a cold day. In addition, she revealed deep conflict, saying she was "hurt" over the fact that her son and daughter-in-law did not use the name she had given their granddaughter and had changed it. Dr. Oh Eun-young analyzed, "The mother tends to think badly of someone if they do not accept her intentions. She is very self-centered."
Moreover, the 'Aemo family' mother said she once gave the daughter-in-law a natural digestive medicine she usually took when the daughter-in-law was struggling with morning sickness, and expressed that she was upset that the daughter-in-law vomited after taking it, which stirred the studio. Dr. Oh Eun-young sharply asked, "Are you a doctor?" and strongly pointed out that one should not casually recommend medicine to a pregnant woman.
The son said, "All I remember from my childhood is being scolded and hit by my mother," and "If my mother shows even the slightest sign of being upset, my body stiffens as if hit by a stun gun. My mother is an object of fear," he confessed. The son's following revelations were shocking. He described being hit with a recorder as a child, which tore his scalp and required sutures; memories of a CCTV being installed in his room when he was in high school; and being beaten until the broom broke while he was asleep, shocking viewers.
The mother also attracted attention by claiming she had been assaulted by her son. She said the son once pinned her in a corner of a room and beat her, prompting a police response. Regarding the incident, the son explained, "It was about the protein supplements I had bought; my mother said, 'What have you ever done to the end?' I went mad at that comment." It was an expression of resentment that had not been empathized with since childhood. The son also lashed out in messages at his mother, who mentioned "abuse," saying, "You talk about abuse?", "What I have endured for 20 years is abuse", and "You are not my mother anymore."
Dr. Oh Eun-young said, "The son shows the typical appearance of a victim of domestic violence. What he experienced as a child was indeed domestic violence and child abuse. Child abuse destroys human dignity. That is why he especially feels fear in front of his mother," and analyzed, "The word 'abuse' became a trigger for the son and exploded into anger toward his mother."
The mother revealed she had a frontal lobe injury from a traffic accident before marriage and said she cannot control her anger. But Dr. Oh Eun-young said, "The accident may have weakened frontal lobe function, but if the anger appeared only during parenting, it is an emotion that arose because things did not go her way," and sharply pointed out, "This is because she thinks of her children as possessions. There may have been some difficulty with control at some point, but the anger likely started when they did not follow her intentions."
Also, the 'Aemo family' mother repeatedly smiled while talking about her son's experience of abuse, raising viewers' questions. Eventually Dr. Oh Eun-young asked bluntly, "Why are you smiling when your son is shouting that he was hurt?" At the end of the broadcast, the 'Aemo family' daughter appeared in the waiting room watching all of this, attracting attention. In a preview released with it, the son mentioned another abuse victim, his younger sibling, saying, "If my condition worsens, I'll become like my younger sibling," which further piqued curiosity.
