"Love Catcher" alum Kim Ji-yeon's sudden divorce has attracted attention amid allegations of domestic violence and infidelity by her husband, baseball player Jeong Cheol-won.
On the 2nd, attorney Lee Jae-hee, who is serving as Kim Ji-yeon's legal representative, issued an official statement regarding Kim Ji-yeon's recently high-profile divorce process and said legal proceedings over custody are underway.
Kim Ji-yeon is an influencer who became known after appearing on the Mnet entertainment program "Love Catcher." A talented alum of Hanyang University's dance department, she married Jeong Cheol-won of the Korea Professional Baseball Lotte Giants in December last year. The two gave birth to a son from a premarital pregnancy before marriage, and they held a wedding about a year after the birth of their son, attracting even more attention.
However, Kim Ji-yeon recently announced the breakup with Jeong Cheol-won on her personal social media. The sudden news of the divorce just over a month after the wedding drew attention, and revelations such as Jeong Cheol-won's alleged infidelity, failure to pay living expenses, and even embezzling the son's first-month bracelet shocked the public.
In this regard, Lee Jae-hee said, "Recently many people have shown great interest in and support for Ms. Kim Ji-yeon's family matters, and Ms. Kim Ji-yeon has drawn great strength from that. We are deeply grateful," he began.
But he explained the rationale behind the announcement, saying, "At the same time, various speculative rumors about this case are rampant, and we have confirmed many instances in which false information has caused secondary harm. In particular, because Jeong Cheol-won's side also mentioned custody through legal representatives, we intend to issue an official statement on behalf of Ms. Kim Ji-yeon."
Lee Jae-hee added, "Since the marriage, Ms. Kim Ji-yeon has suffered constant pain from domestic violence while raising a young child. In addition, many people have reported circumstances that raise suspicion of recent infidelity by Jeong Cheol-won," further shocking the public.
Nevertheless, Kim Ji-yeon tried to maintain the marriage for the sake of the child. However, Lee Jae-hee said, "After the child's father left home leaving the child and stopped paying child support, it is very frustrating that he mentioned divorce and custody through legal representatives."
He also said, "In all future procedures, Ms. Kim Ji-yeon will prioritize protecting the child and securing custody and plans to pursue legal procedures if necessary," signaling an imminent divorce lawsuit.
