Rookie announcer Park Hyo-jin, nicknamed 'Seoul National University NewJeans Min-ji,' breaks into a storm of tears during her first review meeting on KBS2, capturing attention.
KBS 2TV 'The Boss's Ears Are Donkey Ears' (director Choi Seung-hee / hereafter 'Sadanggwi') is a program of voluntary role reversal and self-reflection by Korea's bosses to create workplaces that make people want to work. The last episode recorded a peak rating of 6.7% and a nationwide rating of 4.9%, demonstrating strong power as the No. 1 variety show in its time slot for 190 consecutive weeks. (Nielsen Korea)
In today's (the 1st) broadcast of 'Sadanggwi,' KBS's 51st class rookie announcers Lee Sang-chul, Shim Soo-hyun and Park Hyo-jin's 'news live review meeting' unfolds amid tension. The 'news live review meeting' is a session in front of senior announcers to check how they handle various emergency situations that can occur during live news broadcasts, making it a nerve-wracking gateway for rookie announcers.
Among them, announcer Park Hyo-jin, known as 'Seoul National University NewJeans Min-ji,' bursts into tears during the review meeting, drawing attention to the background. The reason senior announcers focused expectations on Park Hyo-jin's news live performance is that she had previously revealed that her dream was to be an anchor. As the seniors' attention converged, Park Hyo-jin delivered the news with clear enunciation and correct posture, prompting Jun Hyun-moo to praise her, saying, "She has a nice voice," which pleased everyone. At that moment, the one who created the breaking situation in the news was boss Eom Ji-in. Eom Ji-in took on the role of the responsible PD and announced, "Breaking news has come in," signaling the start of the dreaded segment, then instructed, "Please read it through and finish it off."
But at that moment announcer Park Hyo-jin ended up answering, "Yes." She then paused for about five seconds without finishing the closing, and only completed the closing greeting after repeated requests to do so, which sharpened the seniors' gazes. Kim Sook could not hide her worry, saying, "It's because of Eom Ji-in" and "Oh my, what can we do," and Jun Hyun-moo expressed sympathy for the rookie, saying, "She's not used to PD calls."
Park Hyo-jin's 'news live review meeting' was truly a thin sheet of ice ready to crack. Even though Park Hyo-jin said, "I will be careful from now on," Eom Ji-in criticized the broadcast mistake, saying, "Saying you'll be careful isn't enough" and "If this were an actual broadcast, you'd be cut immediately. It's a write-up offense." The seniors delivered stern rebukes, saying, "We expected more because she said her dream was to be an anchor, but the disappointment is greater than the expectation," and when announcer Nam Hyun-jong added, "To put it negatively, there's an expression 'parrot'," the harsh criticism continued and tears began to fall from Park Hyo-jin's eyes. Watching with concern, Jun Hyun-moo said, "Hyun-jong must have been surprised too," and blamed Eom Ji-in, saying, "Eom Ji-in made her cry."
Wiping her tears with a tissue, Park Hyo-jin tried to manage the situation by saying, "I have a bit of a cold, so my nose is running," but once the tears flowed they would not stop, and she eventually ran to the restroom and cried aloud, making everyone feel pitiable.
Kim Sook explained the severity of the review meeting, saying, "The seniors are all announcers, so even the scolding pronunciations are too precise. When it's said in such precise pronunciation, it's like a knife stabbing deeper," then offered warm support to announcer Park Hyo-jin, saying, "But you have to go through situations like that to grow."
Whether rookie announcer Park Hyo-jin, who broke into a storm of tears at her first review meeting, will have a smooth day will be revealed on the main broadcast of 'Sadanggwi.'
