A man in his 30s, surnamed Jeong, who broke into Park Na-rae's home and stole goods worth several tens of millions of won, appealed for leniency.
On the 29th, the 2-1 criminal division (appeals) of the Seoul Western District Court held an appeal court hearing for Jeong, who was indicted on charges of theft and nighttime home invasion.
That day Jeong stood in court wearing a prison uniform. Jeong's side said, "The defendant is remorseful for his wrongdoing," and "he regrets committing the crime to secure living expenses," they claimed.
The court mentioned that Jeong acknowledged the charges and evidence at the first trial and asked, "Are there any additional pieces of evidence to be submitted at the appeal?" Jeong's side answered, "No." In particular, although Jeong attempted to reach a settlement with Park Na-rae's side, it was reported that settlement and deposit offers were rejected through legal counsel, so recovery of damages was not achieved.
In his final argument Jeong said, "I admit all the crimes I committed. I apologize for how serious my crimes are and how much pain they caused the victims," and said, "The victim (Park Na-rae) conveyed through her lawyer that she refuses deposit and settlement. I will do my best so that the stolen items can be returned to (Park Na-rae)."
He continued, "I have taken actions to restore damages for those who were punished in connection with purchasing the stolen goods involved with me and for all others who suffered damage," and said, "Considering these points, I earnestly ask for an opportunity to return to society sooner so I can work hard and use the money I earn to restore damages to the victims. I received a suspended sentence last June for a fraud-related case. I have been repaying a certain amount until my arrest. The victim of that case is also in difficulty. I ask for one chance. I am sorry," he appealed for leniency.
Meanwhile, Jeong is accused of breaking into Park Na-rae's home in Yongsan District, Seoul, in April last year, stealing goods worth several tens of millions of won and fleeing. It was reported that Jeong put the stolen items up for sale as stolen goods and claimed he did not know it was Park Na-rae's house when he broke in. In particular, it was revealed that Jeong was also arrested at the end of March last year after committing thefts at another dwelling in Yongsan District. Meanwhile, Jeong was sentenced to two years in prison at the first trial but appealed the verdict.
