Actor Paul Dano spoke for the first time about director Quentin Tarantino's public remarks belittling his acting.
On the 28th (local time) at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, U.S., Paul Dano told Variety about the controversy surrounding him, "I am very grateful that my fellow actors and the film industry raised their voices on my behalf," adding calmly, "so I didn't need to speak for myself."
Earlier, Tarantino appeared on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast in December last year and, referring to the 2007 film Daredevil Be Blood, described Paul Dano as "the only flaw of the work." He contrasted him with actor Daniel Day-Lewis's overwhelming performance and evaluated Paul Dano's acting with comments such as "lacking presence" and "an uncharismatic actor," sparking controversy.
According to reports in People and the Daily Mail, the Hollywood film community reacted immediately when the remarks were made public. Many actors and directors, including George Clooney, Ben Stiller and director Matt Reeves, publicly defended Paul Dano and praised his acting and character. In particular, Daniel Day-Lewis's camp also conveyed that they agree with the assessment that "Paul Dano is one of the most outstanding actors of his generation," drawing attention.
Also at Sundance that day was actor Toni Collette, who joined to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the release of the film Little Miss Sunshine. Toni Collette said she found Tarantino's remarks difficult to understand and expressed strong displeasure, and Paul Dano briefly expressed gratitude, saying, "I am really thankful to receive that kind of support."
Jonathan Dayton, co-director of Little Miss Sunshine, described Tarantino's remarks as "baffling and shameful," and director Valerie Faris also backed him up, saying, "Paul Dano is an actor widely loved in the industry and a very smart person."
Paul Dano has consistently received praise by showcasing a wide acting spectrum in Daredevil Be Blood, Prisoners, Love & Mercy, The Batman and Pawelmans, among others. He was nominated for the BAFTA supporting actor award for that work and has also been named a nominee for the Golden Globes and the Emmys.
Despite being at the center of the controversy, Paul Dano ultimately did not directly target the other party. Instead, he mentioned the solidarity and trust of his peers and responded with a calm demeanor, and his measured remark has left another resonance.
