KOYOTE member Shinji, overcoming various controversies and a nationwide opposition sentiment, will marry singer Moonwon in May.
Shinji said in an official statement on the 26th, "I thank the people who have supported me unwaveringly for 27 years despite my many shortcomings, and I formally announce the most important marriage news of my life." She added, "As we spent time together, trust built up, and I became grateful that I have someone on my side I can fully rely on," and said, "Moonwon and I will hold our wedding in May and begin the second act of our lives."
Shinji also said, "I am well aware of the many affectionate concerns and worries people have," and added, "I will move forward step by step, keeping pace with the same unchanging self." She also expressed her determination to continue her activities as a singer more faithfully.
Earlier, Shinji first announced the marriage news in June last year. At the time, it drew great attention when it was revealed that the groom-to-be was Moonwon, a singer seven years younger, but a matchmaking meeting video later released on a YouTube channel became the spark of controversy. Public sentiment cooled rapidly after Moonwon confessed that he had been divorced and had a daughter with his ex-wife.
Shinji expressed the position that "because I love him, I can accept him," but long-time KOYOTE members Kim Jongmin and Baekga could not hide their surprise. Criticism over Moonwon's attitude, remarks and attire at the matchmaking meeting followed, with the phrase "nationwide opposition" even appearing.
The controversy extended to Moonwon's past background and private life. Unverified claims circulating online concerned his change of stage name, overseas activities, and his school and military service periods.
Shinji's side conducted fact-checking and officially explained, "All the raised allegations were confirmed to be untrue." Shinji herself also posted on social media, "Together with my agency we checked all the allegations and confirmed they are not true. I will be more careful going forward," she said directly.
