Former group Cleo member Chae Eun-jung calmly opened up about her difficult childhood.
Recently, a video titled "1st-generation girl group Cleo's Chae Eun-jung, I also go to church" was released on the YouTube channel "Renew Me, CBS." In the video, Chae Eun-jung honestly confessed the wounds she experienced in childhood along with her family history.
Chae Eun-jung first recalled her mother's death, saying, "My mother died young, but her battle with illness was so long that we hadn't really been living together for a long time," and "Rather than a great shock, I thought, 'what was going to happen has happened.'" She went on to explain, "My mother had cancer, but it was found late and treatment was difficult. Instead of treatment, she entered a prayer center, and I did not live with her from first or second grade of elementary school until third grade, when my mother passed away."
At the time, her father was devoting himself to his studies at a young age. Chae Eun-jung revealed, "My father was in his 20s studying to become a doctor, and then he went abroad to study for six to seven years. In the meantime, I lived with my grandparents."
Later, her father's remarriage became another wound. She said, "My father lost his wife when he was young and spent his life studying before remarrying, but ultimately there was a mistake," and "When I was in the first year of middle school, my father finished all his studies and came back, but he felt very unfamiliar. He remarried right after he returned."
But the remarried life did not last long. Chae Eun-jung said, "My father and my stepmother did not get along, and they divorced after a year," and "After that, the second remarriage had the greatest impact on my life. As I became a high school student during the most sensitive period, greater conflict and fights continued, and I closed off my feelings toward my father and my concern for my younger sibling."
Conflict at home deepened. Chae Eun-jung said, "My father was more focused on running the hospital than on the family, and my stepmother had a lot of hatred toward me. She spoke ill of my stories to my father so I got scolded and was often beaten," which provoked sympathy.
Nevertheless, Chae Eun-jung said her grandparents' love became a big support. She said, "I received a lot of love from my grandmother and grandfather. I am not the type to take everything too seriously," and "Once I was so distressed that I thought, 'Should I just die?' and went up to the roof of the 9th-floor APT., but I came down because I thought it would hurt too much." She added, "I don't think I felt that extremely lonely."
She also calmly summarized, "There was no lack financially. I think that is also why I had no desire for material things from a young age," and "I think I grew up without deficiency."
