Singer Yu Yeol revealed the behind-the-scenes story of the copyright royalties for his signature song "As I Am Now".
On the 24th broadcast of MBN "Kim Ju-ha's Day & Night," Yu Yeol candidly spoke about the song's creation process and the distribution of its copyright royalties. Asked about the background of the lyrics, he said, "If that were before I got married, I would talk about it in great detail," drawing laughter.
He added, "My wife also met me late and married late. I know the protagonist of the song is someone else." When Kim Ju-ha asked, "Did you write it while thinking of someone?" Yu Yeol replied, "If it's someone you haven't dated, that's even more dangerous."
Cho Jjaze asked, "This song did very well. The copyright royalties must have been huge—how did the two brothers split it?" Yu Yeol said, "It's fifty-fifty. I wrote the lyrics and a friend composed the music."
Jisung-cheol described it as "a dutiful-son song that has provided pocket money every month without fail for 30 years." When Kim Ju-ha said, "The song is a bit difficult, so if it had been easier, more people might have sung it," Jisung-cheol added, "Yu Yeol's singing style has such a refined voice that singing very simple songs wouldn't suit him."
Having been loved consistently for more than 30 years, "As I Am Now" remained a symbolic song that marked the musical starting point for Yu Yeol and Jisung-cheol and sustained their deep friendship.
