Former Blue House executive chef Chun Sang-hyun revealed that he is battling cancer.

Chef Chun Sang-hyun previously appeared on 'Culinary Class Wars: Culinary Class Wars 2' (hereafter 'Culinary Class Wars 2'), drawing attention for showing a warm master-disciple relationship with Chinese cuisine master Hou Deok-juk.
He spoke about his connection with master Hou Deok-juk, saying, "The person who recommended me to be the Blue House presidential chef was master Hou Deok-juk. I learned under him. I heard a request came in asking master Hou Deok-juk to pick a Blue House chef. He received two recommendations, and I submitted my resume; they reviewed it in the first round and submitted me to President Kim Dae-jung's staff. After two months of background checks, I was finally selected."
In the 'Culinary Class Wars 2' TOP7 decider, in the two-person, one-team black-and-white alliance competition, he paired with his master Hou Deok-juk and cooked together and even faced a one-on-one survival match. He said, "I'm the type to find my master quite intimidating. It's not that he scolds us harshly; it's just that approaching him isn't easy and he has a gentle charisma."
He continued, "On 'Culinary Class Wars 2' I performed a joint contest with my master, and that was also a first. Even though I was, in name, the presidential chef, it was still very difficult. I felt like a student. It was hard, but we filmed it enjoyably. I never imagined the two of us would become competitors. At that time it wasn't really a variety show; it was very moving. Master repeatedly said it was hard, so I worried about his health, and since I lost to my master I felt relieved."
In particular, that day Chef Chun revealed for the first time that he is battling cancer, attracting attention. He confessed, "Actually, I was contacted for season 1. I was thinking of appearing in season 1 as well, but I was unwell. The cancer recurred and I had to have another surgery, so I couldn't film season 1."
Regarding his current condition, he said, "I have had surgery and am taking medication now. Chemotherapy. I have had two surgeries. I had parts of my lungs removed twice, and after they were cut out I have been taking chemotherapy pills. One a day. While doing that, there was also a tumor in my head that they said might be a meningioma. I received radiation therapy and surgery for that, and I also have noise-induced hearing loss, so I have trouble understanding speech."
