A, who is on trial for breaking into the home of singer and actress Nana, a former member of the group After School, and committing robbery, denied the charges against him. While listening to the robber's claims, the bench at times instead questioned A.
On the 20th, the Criminal Division 1 of the Uijeongbu District Court Namyangju Branch (presiding judge Kim Guk-sik) held the first trial for A, who was arrested and indicted on charges of robbery and injury.
Earlier, A was handed over for trial on charges of attempted crime after being subdued while allegedly breaking into Nana's home in November last year with a weapon, threatening Nana and her daughter and demanding money. In the process, Nana and her daughter sustained physical injuries. The robber also suffered a laceration to the jaw during the scuffle, but the police judged Nana's side to have acted in self-defense and did not book her.
However, recently A filed a complaint claiming that the acts Nana allegedly committed during the subduing amounted to attempted murder, and the Guri Police Station in Gyeonggi reviewed the attempted murder and special injury charges against Nana and decided not to indict due to lack of evidence.
At the first trial, the prosecution explained the indictment, saying, "A entered Nana's house with a weapon, threatened Nana and her daughter and demanded money, causing injuries." In response, A's side said, "We admit entering Nana's house, but it was for simple theft, not robbery for money, and there was no choking of Nana's mother. We did not assault the victims, and I was subjected to one-sided beating by Nana."
A's side also argued, "The 33-day medical care injury Nana suffered is not defensive wounds caused by the defendant but rather wounds inflicted by the victim," and requested, "Please ask the National Forensic Service to examine whether the defendant's fingerprints are on the weapon and the weapon case held as evidence."
A said, "In a difficult financial situation, I learned through an internet search that many wealthy people including entertainers live in Acheondong and committed the crime, but I did not bring a weapon. I did not choke Nana's mother; startled and screaming, Nana's mother shoved me, so I held her shoulder to calm her, and after Nana's mother had calmed down, Nana suddenly ran out and swung a weapon, and I then fought with Nana, but I appeared to be resisting."
When A argued that Nana and her daughter had used excessive force, the bench retorted, "Put yourself in their shoes: if someone broke into your house and did that, would you do nothing and just stand still?"
Meanwhile, the bench decided to call Nana and her daughter as witnesses at the next hearing. The next trial will be held on March 10.
