'Lover of Joseon' Ryu Si-won revealed the difficult decision to get married again to a math instructor 19 years his junior.
On the afternoon of the 19th, the general programming channel TV CHOSUN variety show 'Lover of Joseon' aired a story revealing Ryu Si-won and Lee Ah-young's journey from their first meeting to marriage.
Ryu Si-won attracted attention by revealing an episode in which he and his wife broke up while dating and later reunited. Ryu Si-won said, "When we first met, because I had once experienced failure, I was afraid of marriage. To be honest, I said, 'I will never marry again.' I thought, 'There is no marriage in my life.' Actually, I started thinking, 'I'll just date,'" he said of his feelings at the time.
He went on to say, "I told her, 'I have no intention of getting married.' I kept saying it even though she didn't ask. Because I kept saying this, she might have wondered whether it was right to keep seeing someone with no future."
Ryu Si-won first married in 2010 and welcomed a daughter but faced a breakup in 2012. After three years of divorce litigation, it was finalized in 2015, and he remarried Lee Ah-young in 2020.
Ryu Si-won's wife explained, "On my birthday I had a drink and mustered the courage to talk. That's why we broke up. I had been preparing myself emotionally during that time. Because it was a relationship with an end, there was no need for me to prolong it. I am someone who has a positive view of marriage, but when he talked about whether we would meet again, I thought it would be better to end it before getting more attached."
The two who had broken up reunited three years later and ultimately married. About the process of reuniting, Ryu Si-won's wife said, "We didn't break up because our feelings cooled, so after breaking up we occasionally asked about each other's well-being, on birthdays and such. Normally saying 'happy birthday' would end it, but that time it kept going. He kept saying, 'Let's have a meal sometime,' and set a date. On the day we met again after three years, I thought he might ask me to go out with him. That's how we started dating again."
