Movie "The Divine Band" (director: Kim Hyung-hyeop | distributor: CJ CGV Co., Ltd. | production: Studio Target Co., Ltd.) is enjoying a "miraculous reverse run."
On the 20th, according to the integrated box office network of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), The Divine Band drew 24,175 people on the 19th, rising to No. 2 on the daily box office.
This is a feat achieved 20 days after its opening on Dec. 31. At the time of release, The Divine Band started with as few as one-tenth the seats (number of screenings) compared with Hollywood blockbusters and strong competitors such as Once We Were Us and Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight (Oseisa).
However, The Divine Band overcame the disadvantage in screen count with the "power of the work" and the "support of audiences." Despite the small number of seats, The Divine Band showed its potential by debuting at No. 5 on the weekend box office in its opening week, and thanks to explosive word of mouth from actual viewers, it seized the No. 1 seat occupancy rate from the second week after release. Packed theaters with no empty seats immediately led to higher reservation rates and improved box office rankings.
After knocking off Zootopia 2 and Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight in succession, The Divine Band climbed to No. 3 at the box office last weekend (16–18) and rode that momentum to No. 2 on the 19th, cementing itself as an icon of box office comebacks.
The production company thanked audiences, saying, "Instead of flashy visuals or huge capital, the audiences chose a rough but sincere story," and added, "This miracle would have been impossible without the audience members who created sold-out lines despite the absolute disadvantage in seat occupancy."
Armed with comedy and emotion that bloom amid the irony of a North Korean security officer creating a fake praise troupe, and music that moves the heart, The Divine Band features actors Park Si-Hoo, Jung Jin-woon, Tae Hang-ho and Jung Ji-geon.
