The film "Sinui Akdan" (director Kim Hyung-hyeop, distributor CJ CGV Co., Ltd., production Studio Target Co., Ltd.) has demonstrated astonishing staying power entering its fourth week after release, surpassing 400,000 cumulative admissions and proving itself the biggest dark horse at the box office in the new year.
On the 19th, according to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) integrated box office system, the film "Sinui Akdan" surpassed 400,000 cumulative admissions on the 18th (Sunday).
Above all, what deserves attention is the "density" of its success. Currently the theater market is dominated by the Hollywood blockbuster "Avatar: Fire and Ash", the romantic epic "Once We Were Us" and the comedy film "Heartman", which occupy many screens. Despite "Sinui Akdan" still having fewer showings and seats than even half of these competing films, it has firmly held the top spot in seat occupancy rate, demonstrating its strength. Packed houses with no empty seats reflect high audience satisfaction and a craze for repeat viewings, raising expectations for long-term box office performance.
The hot numbers online were proven just as clearly at the offline events. The third-week stage greetings held in Cheonan, Jeonju and Gwangju over the past weekend (17–18) were nothing short of a frenzy of enthusiasm.
The stage greetings, which featured director Kim Hyung-hyeop and lead actors including Park Si-Hoo, Jung Jin-woon, Tae Hang-ho, Choi Sun-ja, Seo Dong-won, Nam Tae-hoon, Han Jung-wan, Go Hye-jin and Shin Han-gyeol, sold out immediately when tickets went on sale. Audiences who filled the theaters greeted the actors with screams and chorus-like cheers that seemed to lift them from their seats whenever they appeared, and the actors responded with fan service akin to a concert, even running into the audience to make eye contact.
Armed with laughter and emotion that bloom from the ironic premise of a North Korean State Security officer creating a fake praise troupe, and music that moves the heart, "Sinui Akdan" has entered a long-term box office posture in its fourth week, maintaining unflagging reservation rates.
The production company said it is deeply grateful for the "seat occupancy rate No. 1" and the milestone of "surpassing 400,000" that audiences helped create, and added that it will do its best to continue long-term screenings thanks to the sustained enthusiasm.
Overcoming a disadvantage in number of screens through the film's strength and audience support and demonstrating a textbook example of a "reverse hit," "Sinui Akdan" is currently showing in theaters nationwide.<
