The country's only Formula 3 (F3) driver Shin Woo-hyun calmly recounted the racing crash that threatened his career as an athlete.
On the 17th broadcast of MBC's Omniscient Interfering View, Shin Woo-hyun's intense racing routine and his family's story were revealed.
That day, Shin Woo-hyun mentioned the major crash he experienced during a race the year before last. He said, "My car rolled seven and a half times after contacting another vehicle," and when the footage of the incident was released, the studio was shocked. The car on the screen was damaged beyond recognition, conveying the severity of the crash.
Shin Woo-hyun recalled, "At the time of the crash I didn't even know the car was rolling. I looked up and saw not the sky but the ground. Only then did I realize a serious accident had occurred." He added honestly, "Both of my parents were at that race. I was most worried they would see the accident and tell me to stop racing."
He noted that a race was scheduled for the day after the crash and said, "I told them I would compete no matter what. Fortunately, aside from nausea I had no major injuries." He added, "My mother saw that and realized how important racing is to me. Since then she seems to support me more."
When asked about trauma, he gave a decisive answer. Shin Woo-hyun said, "I knew that you have to get back in the car the day after the crash so it doesn't become trauma," and said, "If I had backed down then I would never have entered that circuit again," prompting admiration from the cast.
Meanwhile, the F3 in which Shin Woo-hyun competes is regarded as a key gateway in the formula racing system toward F1. It is known as an arena of fierce competition where drivers' skills and judgment are revealed under identical-spec machines. The country's only F3 driver Shin Woo-hyun is known to be a nephew of the Hyundai Motor Group owner family. In the world of formula racing, which involves enormous costs and risks, he is challenging the F3 stage determined to be judged by results on the track rather than his family name. <
