Kian84 realized a childhood dream in the Arctic.
On the 18th at 9:10 p.m., the MBC variety show "극한84" (directed by Park Soo-bin · Kim Ki-ho · Jeong Ji-woon) will air episode 8, which reveals the extreme crew standing at the starting line of the Arctic Polar Circle Marathon, the coldest and harshest place in the world.
The next day, ahead of the Race, the extreme crew scouting the course in advance confronts bone-numbing cold caused by nearby glaciers. The members, with crampons attached to their shoes, warm up and rehearse the "crampon marathon," which many are experiencing for the first time in their lives. Amid mounting tension, Kian84 said, "I never imagined running with crampons on," and shared his honest impression.
While putting on equipment, Gangnam told Kian84, "Nice clothes," after seeing his padding, and Kian84 shyly smiled, saying, "It was a coat I really wanted when I was young." The padding Kian84 wore is a product of the U.S. outdoor brand N.
This scene naturally recalled Kian84's past work. Through his webtoon "Fashion King," Kian84 depicted youth culture and desire surrounding North Face padding. In the work, that padding appeared not merely as an outer garment but as an item symbolizing school hierarchy and competition for popularity.
In fact, during the 2011–2013 serialization of "Fashion King," North Face padding was trending among teenagers and college students like a kind of "uniform." Kian84 also said in an interview at the time that the fashion desires in the work reflected actual peer culture.
The "those-era padding" reappearing amid the Arctic's extreme environment summoned the atmosphere of the era that webtoon artist Kian84 had recorded onto another stage called variety television, leaving a strange aftertaste.
