Broadcaster Lee Hye-jung opened up about repeated hurt and disappointment she felt from her family, confessing a tumultuous family life.
On the 17th, the MBN variety show "Sokpulli Show Dongchimi" aired an episode with the topic "Is mom a pushover?" On that day, Lee Hye-jung began by saying, "Am I a rice container? They say they're hungry whenever they see me," and revealed the feelings of having no time to care for herself because she spent her life taking care of her family.
Lee Hye-jung said, "Even when I was sick I made sure my children had food," and lamented, "My son, even after getting married, makes ordinary requests to his father and always asks me for the requests he feels awkward about. At some point I wondered, 'Am I really a pushover in my life?'" She added, "I thought if I treated my children well it would end there, but I was a pushover even to my mother," making the studio somber.
She mentioned her mother, who is 91 this year, saying, "Whenever something that costs money comes up she contacts me. Because of her age, I can't refuse," and, "When she brought up the hair salon, my heart sank. I knew I'd be the one paying." She confessed she felt deeply betrayed when she found out that clothes and bags she had bought for her mother were one day handed over to a senior sister-in-law.
Earlier, Lee Hye-jung shocked the public by revealing she had severed ties with her son. She said, "It's been quite some time since I cut ties with my son. I haven't seen him since December last year." She said she and her son, who was in charge of export work, had worked with a Japanese buyer and achieved results, but emotional rifts that developed at an afterparty eventually led to a breakup.
Lee Hye-jung said, "My son didn't drink even a glass and just sat still. Frustration built up and emotions exploded in the middle of the night," and confessed, "When my son said, 'That's not helping,' I grabbed his collar." She ultimately told him, "Don't ever show up in front of me until I die," and afterward cut off contact and experienced deep regret. She added, "I even changed the CCTV and the locks in case he might come home," adding to the poignancy.
Recently her son knelt and apologized, but Lee Hye-jung said, "The apology was followed by 'I didn't mean to,' which made my feelings even more complicated," and she showed she could not easily open her heart. Still, she left room for the possibility that it was not a complete severance by saying, "But still..."
Lee Hye-jung has also repeatedly confessed on broadcasts about the wounds from her husband's affair. She recalled a moment on a past variety show when she directly saw her husband with another woman, saying, "In anger I tore his dress shirt and cut it up with scissors." Even so, her confession that she endured to protect the family left many people with a deep impression.
Despite repeated wounds under the name of family — mother, son, husband — Lee Hye-jung still holds on to the relationships. Her self-deprecating use of the term "pushover" revealed her true feelings, drawing sympathy from viewers.
