Dynamic Duo member Gaeko (real name Kim Yoon-seong) directly revealed that he has divorced his wife Kim Sumi, and past remarks by Kim Sumi are drawing renewed attention.
On the 16th, Gaeko announced the divorce on social media, saying, "After many long conversations, we decided to end our relationship as a married couple while respecting each other's lives." He said, "As parents, the responsibility of joint custody will continue to the end," emphasizing responsibility for their children, but he declined to discuss the reasons for the divorce. On the same day, Kim Sumi also posted on social media, saying, "Because this is a personal matter, I will share it cautiously," and, "After sufficient conversations last year, we resolved our marriage with the choice to respect each other's lives."
As this news spread, remarks Kim Sumi made last April on the YouTube channel "Not an annoying attention-seeking sister" are circulating again, especially on online communities.
At the time, Kim Sumi candidly described how she achieved independence by entering the cosmetics business after childbirth and parenting. When Lee Ji Hye asked on the show, "There are stories that business income was better than Gaeko's income," Kim Sumi carefully replied, "I don't know exactly how much my husband earns. But when I started the business, I earned a lot myself."
Lee Ji Hye replied, "The fact that a star's wife once earned more than the star is cooler than any success story," expressing admiration, and Kim Sumi recalled, "In my late 20s, looking out the window after having a child and wondering 'what is my life,' I was surprised myself that eight years later I launched a cosmetics line and reached a period where I earned more than my husband."
Those remarks contained the identity struggles and worries she experienced after giving birth and her determination to become independent, and they resonated with many at the time. Kim Sumi also said, "I prepared to develop cosmetics even before having a second child," and "I didn't want to give up my life while raising children," drawing attention.
As these remarks coincided with the divorce news, some have interpreted them as a possible precursor to the divorce, but the parties involved have not mentioned any specific reasons. Gaeko also gave no further explanation beyond saying it was "a decision made out of respect for each other's lives." Kim Sumi asked people to refrain from excessive interpretation, saying, "We will continue to fulfill our responsibilities and roles as parents together."
Meanwhile, Gaeko has publicly acknowledged Kim Sumi's abilities to the extent that he once said on a show, "My wife is more popular than me," and Kim Sumi has remained active as a broadcaster, influencer and businesswoman. The couple married in 2011 and have one son and one daughter.
Even when facing the choice of divorce, the two promised joint custody. Kim Sumi's past remarks are being read anew not only as an income story but as the posture of an individual who tried to preserve her own life and identity within the relationship, leading to various interpretations.
