'Stars' Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant' Son Tae Jin revealed the reason he began doing music.
On the 16th broadcast of the KBS 2TV entertainment show 'Stars' Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant' (hereafter 'Fun-Staurant'), singer Son Tae Jin appeared as a new guest chef, and his mother revealed her education methods.
Son Tae Jin, a graduate of Seoul National University's vocal music department, was different even in his daily life. He woke up to an alarm and, as soon as he opened his eyes, watched American news on his phone without Korean subtitles. He even watched at double speed and surprised viewers by also watching French and Chinese news.
Moon Jeong-hee marveled at Son Tae Jin's mastery of English, Chinese, Japanese, French and Italian, saying, "He really is an overachiever."
Son Tae Jin said, "I lived overseas for about 16 years. I grew up in Singapore through elementary, middle and high school. I was born in Seoul, but I spent my childhood entirely in Singapore. Going to Seoul National University was my first life in Korea," which drew attention.
While in Singapore, Son Tae Jin attended Chinese school and Korean school, then picked up languages while attending an American school in middle and high school. He was even accepted to a French university for hotel management.
However, Son Tae Jin gave up the French university to pursue music and entered Seoul National University's vocal music department. He said, "While at Seoul National University I went to study in Italy. I grew up being exposed to various cultures."
Above all, that day on 'Fun-Staurant' Son Tae Jin's mother appeared. Displaying elegant beauty, she said, "We thought English was important, but we wanted him to learn Chinese, so we sent him to Chinese school. After that, Son Tae Jin could speak English and Chinese, but he didn't even know basic Korean words. So we sent him to Korean school," revealing Son Tae Jin's education method and drawing attention.
Regarding Son Tae Jin's current Korean ability, his mother said, "There were times when he even used words like 'hot' and 'cold' inappropriately for the situation. Now his (Korean) skills have improved a lot."
Then the production team asked, "What made Son Tae Jin start music?" Son Tae Jin's mother recalled, "American schools select kids who are a bit better in music to make them singers. If you join the singers, you sing at school events, and Tae Jin joined the singers."
She continued, "When Tae Jin graduated high school, he sang the U.S. national anthem a cappella alone in front of many people," saying she sensed that he was enjoying it there. She said that made her think it would be good for Tae Jin to do music.
So his mother suggested that Son Tae Jin give up the French university he had been accepted to and study in Korea. On his mother's recommendation, Son Tae Jin applied to and was accepted into Seoul National University's vocal music department.
Son Tae Jin expressed gratitude to his mother, saying, "From then on I went down a path I had not planned. My life changed."
