The minstrel of the pop music scene, Choi Baek-ho, for the first time revealed the love story with his wife, from their fate-like first meeting to marriage.
On the 17th broadcast of MBN's Kim Joo-ha's Day & Night, Choi Baek-ho, marking his 50th year since debut, appeared and shared stories about his life, his classic songs and his family.
On that broadcast Choi Baek-ho began, when asked "How did you meet your wife?," by saying, "We met as if by fate." He recalled, "When I was singing in Itaewon, a very close friend came with his wife and another woman. He said she was his sister-in-law." He then said, "Not long after, we met again at a wedding hall, and a few months later we happened to run into each other again on a department store escalator," recalling the repeated meetings.
Choi Baek-ho said with a laugh, "We went down and talked again, and the older sister who was with her went home and said, 'My sister is seeing a strange singer.'" But he said his family's reaction was by no means light.
He confessed, "It wasn't just opposition. My father-in-law even came to the boarding house and said that if we kept meeting he would make it impossible for me to have a social life." He showed affection, adding, "My wife is a very strong person. She didn't waver much. That's why she seems to live with someone like me."
At first Choi Baek-ho thought the strong opposition was because of his history of divorce, but he revealed the reason was different. He said, "It turned out that being from Gyeongsang Province was a big reason," and added, "So when I said I would go down to live in Busan, my wife followed me." In the end the two got married, but he said his father-in-law did not attend the wedding and only his mother-in-law was present.
He added, "My mother-in-law liked my songs, so she did not oppose," and said, "After my daughter was born, my father-in-law contacted me saying, 'I brewed some alcohol, so come and drink.' That's how the relationship loosened."
Finally, Choi Baek-ho did not hide his gratitude toward his wife. He confessed, "I still tell my wife, 'If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have made it this far,'" and said, "The life of drinking every day and wandering was put in order after meeting my wife, and having a daughter made me get my act together. So I consider myself a devoted lover."
